Kristina and Sydney stood beside the reception desk as June welcomed the couple who had arrived at eleven right on the dot. The much-anticipated and dreaded Heather was between them.

One look told Kristina that the word precocious had probably been coined with the little redheaded girl in mind. Her mother was holding her tightly by the hand, and neither of them looked very happy about the union.

Heather’s eyes bounced about the room in anticipation. An accident waiting to happen, Kristina suddenly thought. The next moment, though it seemed physically impossible, Heather managed to knock over the lamp on the end table as she passed it.

The smile on June’s face never changed as the lamp crashed to the wooden floor. “That’s all right, we’ll clean it up.”

“Of course you will,” Mrs. Hennessey retorted crisply. “I don’t want Heather hurting herself.”

It annoyed Kristina that neither parent had the decency to apologize for the child or to scold her.

“Sydney,” June said, “could you show the Hennesseys to their room, please?” She took out a key from one of the cubbyholes and placed it on the counter. “You’ll be staying in room 5.”

Elaine Hennessey looked at the key as if it were tainted. “I thought we were going to stay in the one we had before. Room 4. I specifically asked—”

“It’s being renovated,” Kristina quickly explained, before June could offer an excuse.

Her expression never changed, but there was a grateful look in June’s eyes.

Heather tugged her hand free from her mother’s as her parents began to follow Sydney to their room. “No, I want to see the ocean now.”

Mrs. Hennessey sighed, clearly worn out. “Later, dear,” she said between clenched teeth.

Heather stamped her foot, her eyes narrowing. “Now. You said I could. You said I could as soon as we got here. You did,” she insisted.

At a loss, the woman tried to reclaim her daughter’s hand. “Yes, but now I’m saying later.”

Heather raised her hands over her head, dancing out of reach.

“Heather,” Mr. Hennessey warned, “behave.”

This had all the makings of a scene. Kristina stepped forward, between mother and child. “Mrs. Hennessey, I’d be glad to take Heather for a walk on the beach while you and your husband settle in.”

Suspicious, the little girl looked at Kristina uncertainly. She wasn’t the only one. June and Sydney exchanged glances, surprised by the offer.

Mrs. Hennessey didn’t hesitate. Her dour expression, softened by relief, lessened considerably. “That would be wonderful.”

Kristina bent down to the little girl’s level. There was something in her antagonistic attitude that struck a distant chord within her. Instinctively she understood that Heather felt the only way she would get attention was to make noise.

“Heather, my name is Kris. I’d be happy to take you for a walk along the beach, if you’d like.”

Heather appeared to weigh her options. The ocean won. She placed her hand in Kristina’s.

Though she couldn’t have put into words why, Kristina felt a deep sense of satisfaction. They walked toward the front door. “We’ll be back in about an hour,” she promised Mrs.
