CHAPTER 9

It irked me like nothing else that Ginny was sitting in a highchair at the other end of the dining table right next to Spencer. Normally, she would sit on my lap during dinner. But no. Spencer insisted that she sit with him. And what was even worse was that he was feeding her, helping her, and she was laughing, smiling, and seemed as comfortable with him as with the people who had raised her.

All my lessons on stranger danger had done nothing, that was clear.

Every so often, my gaze locked with Spencer’s. I didn’t want to look at him. But he sat right across from me, so the man was impossible to ignore. And what was worse was that ever since I sat down thirty minutes ago, I could feel the tension between Spencer and Caden. I had kept my head down as much as possible, only chiming in with an occasional nod or smile, hoping we’d make it out of this dinner alive. But with all the tension brewing in the air, something just told me that things were about to blow.

Big time.

Caden stood and repeatedly dinged his spoon against his crystal wine glass, causing everyone to look at him.

“Ellie and I have an announcement to make,” he announced.

No. No, no, no! This was so not the moment to announce this. Earlier, when we had arrived back at the house, we hadn’t been able to locate my mom and Rose. So instead, we had gone back to my room and had celebrated in the most intimate way. I had thought we would tell my family in private, and I thought Caden would have been considerate enough to understand that. But it would seem that he was more set on getting the information out rather than be considerate about the timing.

Rose, who was on her phone, glanced up briefly, then returned her attention to her screen.

“Do tell us,” Spencer said, eyes as narrow as slivers as he sipped his wine.

I took Caden’s hand and squeezed—hard.

“Maybe this can wait,” I leaned over and whispered. But he completely ignored me.

“Ellie has agreed to become my wife.” The way he said ‘my wife’ made me feel like a piece of meat. Of course, I knew why he had phrased it that way: to claim me. To make sure Spencer knew I was Caden’s. God, this dinner was so going to end in a disaster.

My mom’s hand hit her mouth and she gasped. But by the way she gasped, I could tell she didn’t like the news. No, not one bit.

“Congratulations,” Spencer said, all emotion removed from his voice and face. I looked down at my plate, most of my ham and au gratin potatoes still there.

“Well, I have an announcement myself,” Spencer said. He stood as he pinged his spoon against his crystal glass, mimicking Caden.

My ears perked up.

“You do?” my mom trilled.

Caden, appearing a bit miffed, sat down.

“I’ll be moving to your neck of the woods so I can be part of my daughter’s life,” Spencer said with a smug look on his gorgeous face.
