After a few hours in a plane cabin with Rebecca, I have an even greater appreciation and sympathy for her ex-husband leaving. Which is almost certainly a thought I’m going to hell for.

But screw it. Add it to the list of several thoughts these days that are sending me slightly south of Heaven.

At least Julianna is also on the flight. Which ties in nicely to that whole part about me going to Hell. Because the entire flight, it’s everything I can do not to devour her with my eyes.

I grin when I glance down at the notification on my phone, and the Snap message from “Julesius CaeserSalad”.

| if that’s a Cold War reference, does that make you the US?

| Obviously, I’m the good guys.

| Which makes me the bad guy?

I’m distracted from Snapchat when Rebecca, champagne flute in hand, rambles into the “schedule” for the weekend.

Nothing like a rigorous, forced, and joyless schedule of photoshoots, public appearances, and a goddamn gala event to suck the magic right out of Christmas.

My phone buzzes, and I glance down at the app.

| We’ve already established that you’re Snape.

I chuckle. But inside, the battle for my mortal soul rages on.

On the one side, yes, we’ve buried the hatchet, so to speak. We’ve ended the Cold War, with an unspoken agreement to just simply move past the… incidents between us. Which seems nice and tidy and convenient on paper.

Except, that’s not true at all. There’s nothing neat or convenient about it. And it’s feeling less and less like a buried hatchet, and more and more like a buried secret.

And buried secrets never, ever stay there.
