MS. KRASNER!” GEORGE’S URGENT voice came from the hallway. “Please! I don’t need to see—”

“It won’t take more than a second,” the receptionist interrupted.

Nancy’s breath caught in her throat as the office door started to swing inward. She dropped down noiselessly behind the desk, her heart pounding a mile a minute.

“Oo-ouch!” George let out an anguished cry. “My ankle—I think I’ve twisted it!”

George was one of the most coordinated people Nancy knew, so she realized George was just pretending. Peeking under the desk, Nancy saw the door stop halfway open. Yes! The ploy was working!

“Here, let me help you. How bad is it?” the young woman asked in a voice filled with concern.

“I—I’m not sure. If you could help me back to the other room . . .” Nancy grinned to herself, imagining George’s helpless expression.

Nancy quickly returned the file to its drawer and used her bobby pin to lock it again. Then she tiptoed to the door and listened. When she heard the two voices fade, she guessed they were inside the first room. She peeked down the hallway to make sure it was deserted, then ran to the reception area and hurried outside.

She didn’t want Eriksen’s employee to see her, so she decided to wait for George at a pizzeria across the street. Sure enough, when George came out of the building a few minutes later, the young woman was with her. George was turning her ankle from side to side, trying to convince the receptionist that her ankle was strong enough for her to drive. Finally they said goodbye, and Nancy jogged back across the street to the convertible.

“How’s your ankle?” she asked, smiling at George as she hopped into the passenger seat.

George turned in the driver’s seat to grin at her. “I seem to have made an amazing recovery. It doesn’t hurt at all now.” Then, more seriously, she asked, “Did you find anything?”

“Sort of,” Nancy answered. “Remember what Richard told us about AeroTech supplying substandard computer equipment to a California military base? Well, Steven Eriksen was implicated in that scandal.” She frowned down at the dashboard. “I didn’t have time to search the whole office, but I didn’t find proof that the same thing is happening at Davis Field or that Eriksen had anything to do with Jill’s death.”

“I guess we’ll just have to keep trying,” George said optimistically.

Nancy let out a sigh, then checked her watch. “It’s only a quarter to five. What time are we supposed to meet Richard for dinner?”

“Not until six-thirty,” George told her. “I wouldn’t mind doing some shopping before dinner. We passed some clothing stores that looked cool.”

“Shopping, huh?” Nancy gave George a sideways glance as she handed over the car keys. Buying clothes wasn’t usually a priority for George, but Nancy had a feeling that some of her friend’s priorities had shifted since she’d met Richard Mirsky. “Is it serious between you and Richard? Should I start shopping for my bridesmaid’s dress?”

“No way! It’s not like that with Richard and me,” George said, laughing.
