I didnât know what I planned to do when Alexis called. After I dropped Mom off at home, I drove aimlessly. I could have called one of my friends, but I wasnât in the mood to be surrounded by anyone. The ugly secret Iâve been trying to forget seems to be intent on coming to the surface. What if by keeping my mouth shut, Iâm doing more harm than good? What if people need to know the evil thatâs roaming freely in Triton Cove?
I drove to the beach and stayed there for hours. Not even the pitch-black darkness that descended after sunset drove me away. It was only when my phone rang and I saw Alexisâs name on the screen that I snapped out of my pity party. It was too windy at the beach, so I let the call go to voice mail and only called back when I was in the car. Making her wait was a bonus.
Now Iâm driving to her grandparentsâ house, going over the speed limit because I canât fucking wait to see her again. This feeling is nothing Iâve ever felt before, and I canât put a name to it. Sure, I can come up with excuses, say itâs just a game, but deep down, I know itâs more than that.
Hell, Iâm not going to analyze this shit now. I have a favor to gain.
I make it to Alexisâs place in record time, but guessing sheâs in the doghouse with her grandparents, I park in front of the gated mansion and text her. Two minutes later, the smaller gate opens, and out comes Alexis, wearing an all-black ensemble that makes her look like a spy. If it werenât for her flaming-red hair, sheâd blend in with the darkness.
After the beach, I put my carâs top down, needing to feel the wind on my face. She veers for the back seat first and dumps the large bag she was carrying there. I glance over my shoulder and confirm itâs her fatherâs safe. Quickly, she takes the seat next to me and shuts the door hard, keeping her stare ahead.
âWhatâs the matter, babe?â
âCan we please just go?â She looks at the house.
âNot without a proper greeting.â
I lean across the gap between us, reaching for the back of her head with my hand. Before she can react or pull away, I claim her lips. Funny how I didnât want to cross that line with her, and now I canât help kissing her any chance I get.
She only lets me savor her for a few seconds before tensing. I pull back without a word and shift gears, then peel out of the parking spot.
After a minute, she says, âThank you for picking me up.â
âDonât thank me yet. I have ulterior motives, remember?â
She snorts. âI didnât forget. What is it that you want in return?â
âNothing scandalous.â
âIâm sure we have different views of whatâs scandalous.â
âI want the same thing I asked at the pool. Your admission that you want me to fuck you.
