13 - The Sun Shaft
It was a long wait. The lights of distant Bridgeton provided a very dim illumination, so at least they did not have to wait in pitch blackness.
When they first climbed in, Embra gladly removed the pillow stuffed beneath her shirt.
âGreat,â Jordan sighed in mock resignation. âOne more mouth to feed. What shall we name our child?â
âItâs not ours,â Embra replied. âThis might not be the best time to tell you, but I was unfaithful.â
First they had to pass the rest of the day, which they did by eating a meal from the bag of food they found secreted within their refuge. It contained two loaves of bread, a few fruits and vegetables, three hardboiled eggs, and two wineskins, one filled with water, the other with a weak wine.
As they ate, they talked about the surprising revelation about Delvin.
âDo you think he knew more than he let on?â Embra asked.
âProbably,â Jordan said.
âWhy do you think he didnât tell us what he knew?â Embra asked. âHe lied to us. He said he was returning home, but instead, he left us in Pelis and apparently headed to Bridgeton, stopping here to drop off this food. Why leave us? Why not just take us on with him?â
âI have no idea about any of it,â Jordan said. âI suppose weâll just have to wait for answers until we can talk with him again.â
They chewed in silence for a time, then Jordan said, âBelmont said that he and Delvin were both Flame Kings. So thereâs more than one. But I must not be one, since neither of them said I was or treated me with any deference, as they have you. They treated you like royalty, but I was nothing to them.â
âIt doesnât make sense,â Embra said. âIf theyâre Flame Kings and youâre not, why can I sense you but not them, and why can they sense me? You appear special to me, but they donât, yet they say theyâre Flame Kings, whatever that means, and I seem to appear special to them. You would think that if theyâre special, I would be able to sense them and not you, but itâs exactly opposite.â
Jordan shrugged. âBelmont said that all would be made clear in the morning. Heâs been trustworthy up to this point. I guess weâll have to trust him a bit more.â
When they were done eating, there was really nothing to do other than lie around. They discussed going above and looking once more into the Chasm, but decided against it, not wanting to attract the attention of the distant Darker guards.
They also held out hope that Belmont might finish his business early, and return to them that evening. But he didnât.
Eventually Embra pointed beneath their feet, and announced that the Sun was directly under them.
âLong time to wait,â Jordan said. Then he yawned and drifted off to sleep.
