CHAPTER SIX
âSLEEP well?â
A momentâs disorientation at finding Nick Sullivan in her bedroom gave way to total recall. And something not far off panic. Resisting the urge to bury herself as deeply as possible in the bedclothes, Tamsin shifted awkwardly upright in bed, one hand clutching the sheet, the other reaching clumsily for the cup he was holding.
Green-gold eyes surveyed her disorder without sympathy and then he put the cup down on the small table beside her. It was probably safer there, she recognised, pushing back the tangle of curls from her face. Why didnât he go? Did he enjoy seeing her at a disadvantage? Probably. Then she remembered the question that had woken her and guessed he was still awaiting an answer. Surely even he could tell from her groggy expression and the fact that she was still having difficulty focusing that it was waking up, not sleeping, that was the problem? Indignation overcame embarrassment.
She glared at him. âWonderfully.â She couldnât help it if that sounded like a complaint. Besides, she realised with some surprise as more of her mind began to function, it was true. Those few hours since the police had left had been more restful than any of her recently overlong and wakeful nights.
She looked at Nick. His hair was a mess and stubble darkened his chin. Heâd pulled on his jeans but the white shirt hung loose and unbuttoned. He looked marvellous. Even with, she noticed, slightly bloodshot eyes. She remembered where heâd spent the night, and why, and asked with only a hint of malice, âHow about you?â
He winced. âDonât ask. I may never get the knots out of my spine. That couch would be a boon to any self- respecting torturer. Two nights on it and anyone would be begging to talk.â
âIâm sorry.â She was, but she couldnât help the hint of laughter in her voice.
âCat.â He yawned suddenly and stretched. There was no evidence of knotting in that supple body as far as she could see. Her mouth went dry and she was glad of the tea even if the hand that reached for it wasnât entirely steady. She was even more relieved when he ran a hand through his hair and said, âIâll grab a shower while you finish waking up.â
She was already awake. Certainly awake enough for her unruly mind to be disturbingly quick to conjure up visions of Nick in her bathroom. When she made her own way in there minutes after she had heard him leave and felt reasonably sure she wasnât going to bump into him she discovered that there was something even more intimate about being in the small, steamy room with the bath still wet from his shower, his damp towel folded neatly over the radiator, the mirror misted with condensation. He might not be there but the aftermath of his presence was everywhere, and powerfully sensuous. For a few dangerous minutes Tamsin allowed the atmosphere to enfold her, letting herself relax in the warm spray of the shower.
