The muted sounds of clinking glassware and the murmurs of other guests failed to intrude on Angieâs wonder at the evening. She was settled into a cozy booth with a hot guy in a restaurant that didnât feature a super-sized meal on the menu. It was like being in heaven.
Last night, sheâd wreaked havoc on Rebeccaâs walk-in closet. Sheâd decided to heed the advice given by fashion mavens for decades and had selected a black chiffon dress with clean lines, hemline just below the knee and a v-neck, not too plunging, of course.
But sheâd wantedâno, neededâto add her own personality whether the results were appropriate or not. Today, her first item of business was shopping.
At four oâclock sheâd raced from the library and headed downtown where she indulged herself by purchasing three-inch red strappy heels and a garnet pendant with matching chandelier earrings. Classy, but with a little zing she couldnât resist. One side of her hair was secured with a clip, leaving the other side in a fall of curls.
Whit was sitting in the bar when she arrived. She heaved a sigh of relief. Despite his apparent eagerness for the date, she still hadnât quite believed it until she actually saw him waiting for her. Suddenly, the night seemed full of promise.
He joined her at the entry. âRebecca, you look great.â
âAm I late?â She was surprised to find her heart beating faster. It was only dinner, after all. And it wasnât like she was unaccustomed to being around men. Quite the opposite. It was this man, at this time, in this place. Overall, a potent combination.
âNot at all. I just didnât want to waste a moment of our date.â He took her arm and they followed the hostess to their booth
After the waiter delivered drinks, she said, âYou didnât have to say that.â
âExcuse me?â He looked puzzled.
âIâm not the type of woman who needs compliments all the time.â
He took her hand and covered it with his. âWho did this to you?â
âMy turn to say âexcuse me?ââ She could get lost in his clear blue eyes.
âWho made you think you didnât deserve compliments?â
âIââ
âIt doesnât matter. This is what you need to know about me. One, I donât play mind games. Two, I say what I mean.â He lifted her hand to his lips and pressed a kiss into her palm. âThree, you look absolutely beautiful and I feel lucky you agreed to have dinner with me. Do I make myself clear?â
Angie felt like her heart stopped, only to resume pounding so hard she was sure Whit could hear it. The heat from his touch shot up her arm and spread throughout her body, leaving little shocks in its wake. She couldnât say anything because she was pretty sure it was bad form to cry on a first date.
Emotions warred with good sense and she lifted her hand to his cheek, caressing the sculptured angle down to his lips. Whitâs eyes closed for a split second at her touch.
âIâll take that as a âyes.
