Chapter Seven

Demi

I am being treated as a prisoner. Ragnar, Ein, and Kodak have gone hunting for food, but I am left behind with Tiger. I wish Tiger had gone and Ein had stayed, but that will never happen again. I am a bad influence, so they say. It seems that even down on the planet’s surface, I am capable of corrupting those around me.

The one I am left with is the one I know the least, Tiger, the man with the dramatic hair and scarring. I suppose I should be glad I was not left with the one who took me roughly in a place no woman should ever be taken. Kodak’s taste for perversion is clear. Tiger’s is yet to be made obvious, but I sense it inside him. He is menace made into the form of a man. Pain is written all over him, and when his single eye falls on me, it is cold.

We are camped underneath a rocky overhang, which just barely dares call itself a cave. Tiger is cleaning his weapons while I sit, bored by the long hours in which nothing happens. That changes when the wind shifts and dark clouds begin to gather above our heads. In the tower, clouds were always below us, and their changing colors were nothing of any concern. Most days, the sun’s rays would gleam off the perfect white and it was as if we were something entirely separate in all creation.

Below the clouds is an entirely different proposition. Down here, they enclose me, and I am subject to their whim. There is a sound that makes it seem as though the whole sky is growling. I have no comprehension of what is happening. The world has turned against me, become violent above my head.

I take a few steps away from Tiger, out into the open. He doesn’t seem to notice me, and my attention is locked on the dark clouds above that are blotting out the sky. The day is already on the verge of night, and this change only hastens the coming of shadows.

Suddenly, disturbingly, water starts to fall from on high. I have heard of rain. I read of it in Sister Sudo’s annotations, but I had no idea how terrifying it would be to experience in person. The skies open up and gets somehow louder, shouting and banging.

Panicked, I run toward the forest in hopes of avoiding the deluge. Tiger rushes up behind me, wraps his hands around my wrists and pulls me against his body, scooping me up with one hand under my butt. He drags me back under the overhang where the water does not reach us and gives my damp form a stern shake.

“What were you doing?”

“The sky is wet! And loud! I was frightened!”

He gives me a quizzical look. “You don’t know what weather is?”

“There’s no weather in the tower. The sky is just the sky. It goes blue and then black. It’s so strange down here.”

He shakes his head. “Sounds like it was strange up there.
