IN ITS MASTER’S VOICE

As Corrigan argued in “The Commerce of Auteurism,” directorial interviews, in which filmmakers are prompted to tell stories about their film and to explain their creative choices, are “one of the few documentable, extratextual spaces where the auteur, in addressing groups of fans and critical viewers, can engage and disperse his or her own organising agency as auteur” (Corrigan 1991:118). Justifying the attention he pays in his essay to the paraphernalia or ancillary discourses of film culture (“extra-texts,” such as interviews) rather than to films themselves, he writes:

[I]n linguistic terms, the mechanisms for identifying with a speaking subject, usually a director, have become as important to communication in film culture today as the so-called textual statement of a movie itself or the different ways it is received by different audiences: the commercial drama of a movie’s source can say as much today as the drama of a movie and the dispositions of its viewers

(Corrigan 1991:118).
