Chapter 7

Fiji Blues

‘I’ve never been on such an exposing show in a primetime slot every night. To step out from under that security blanket of my usual music shows is really exciting but obviously nerve-racking too.’

Ten months after Live 8, Fearne jumped the BBC ship and defected to Fiji to host Love Island for ITV, joining her former Comic Relief comrade Patrick Kielty to front the second series of the six-week tropical reality show. ‘I was hooked on the last series, so I am really excited that I’m going to be packing up my flip-flops and setting off to the sun. This time round, I won’t just be gossiping about the show with my mates but the whole country!’ she enthused.

The programme also offered her the ideal opportunity to do what she loves doing best – matchmaking. ‘There’s not enough romance in this world, so I hope the blokes on the island are romantic and woo the ladies. You’ve got to be yourself because the public will quickly see through an act,’ she explained. ‘If you’ve got bad habits, show them, warts and all!’

It seemed she had got the gig because the ITV bosses had struggled to find someone willing to replace the previous year’s presenter, model-actress Kelly Brook, who was criticised for being wooden and having a lack of chemistry with Kielty. Even though Denise Van Outen, Lisa Tarbuck and Daisy Donovan were screen-tested to present the series, they all turned it down. But, as Paul Jackson, ITV director of entertainment and comedy, said at the time, ‘Fearne is perfect for the show.’

And it couldn’t have come at a better time for her. Just weeks before she headed out to Fiji, she had broken up with her then boyfriend, Luke Pritchard, frontman for indie band the Kooks. They had been dating ever since they met three months earlier, but Fearne had apparently grown tired of his lack of attention and so she ended their romance.

The relationship came to an abrupt halt following a big night at the Ibiza Rocks launch at London’s Sin Club. It was there that one of those ubiquitous ‘friends’ revealed that despite Luke being just Fearne’s type, and although he had been very keen at the start, he had become overwhelmed with the Kooks’ recent successes and unfortunately developed a cocky attitude because of it. He was receiving lots of fan mail and offers from groupies and that’s when all the attention seems to have gone to his head. According to the ‘friend’: ‘The first bust-up was early in May after which he begged for another chance. They saw each other at the Ibiza Rocks launch but it was pretty apparent that it wasn’t going to work. By the end of the night there was a lot of tension and it was obvious strong words were exchanged. Fearne said, then and there, she didn’t want to see him again and he was gutted. Now Luke thinks that he played it too cool and lost out.’
