Chapter Eight

There were no street lamps out here and the faint spill of moonlight was crisscrossed by the gaps between the windowpanes, light too faint to be of use. It left Ezra cocooned in shadow and shared body heat, divorced from the rest of the world.

He shivered as Logan’s fingertips danced over his chest, drawing runes that he alone could see into flesh that was his to kiss and bruise however he pleased. Ezra tried not to dwell on the sentiment for fear of where he might end up.

More and more, the hidden corners of his psyche proved treacherous, like intricate webs of cravings he was too cowardly to confess.

He forced his thoughts elsewhere—to their last tryst, inevitably, because it wouldn’t easily be forgotten.

“So… Do you do this with all the men your sister sets you up with?”

Logan’s tactile exploration ceased abruptly, index poised on the shelf of Ezra’s collarbone. “The ones I like,” Logan hedged. “And none she’s ever met in therapy before, if that’s what you’re asking.”

It wasn’t, but Ezra could appreciate his willingness to volunteer that extra detail. It brought to mind another point they had yet to touch upon.

“Aren’t you going to ask what I was doing there?”

“No.”

Ezra peered at him, shadows settling into a filmy echo of Logan’s features. “Aren’t you curious?”

“I’m desperately curious,” Logan said, “but if I ask and you don’t want to tell me, you’ll either have to make something up or you’ll refuse outright. Either way, I’d be putting you in a position you may not want to be in.”

“You’ve given it some thought.”

Logan jerked up a shoulder. Ezra felt the hitch against his arm. They had barely moved since mid-afternoon. He saw nothing wrong with that.

“You’ll have realized by now that I don’t do this a lot,” Logan said, resuming his caresses. “It’s too risky.”

“You’re afraid of a little blackmail?”

“I’m afraid of seeing my privacy forfeited because some arsehole decides I wasn’t generous enough or kind enough… Or skilled enough.”

Ezra caught Logan’s fluttering, fine-boned hand and wound their fingers together. Shh. “Why do you assume that would happen? People have other things to do than make your life miserable…”

Logan allowed himself to be mollified, but he was still grousing when he answered. “Doesn’t feel like it lately.”

He meant the vote of no confidence and the pressure to conserve assets that he didn’t want. Logan’s position was nowhere near as secure as it had been when his father was in good health.

Even so, compassion was hard to come by.

“To be fair, nothing’s stopping you from cutting loose, selling everything and retiring to your own private island in the Caribbean…”

Sure, the paparazzi would give chase, but if Logan did nothing scandalous for the first six months, they would lose interest.

“It’s not that simple,” Logan said, sighing.

Ezra clucked his tongue. “Oh, come off it. You’re worth—what? Billions? You’re hardly down on your luck here.”

Logan stiffened against his side. “So you think I should suck it up and be a man?”

Was that what it boiled down to? Ezra swallowed past the knot in his throat.
