EIGHT.

Lindsay had no idea that a forty-five minute journey could be so torturous. From Simon’s attempt to keep a positive spin on the day by babbling incessantly, to Toyah’s endless death-glare in Lindsay’s very specific direction, to Becky’s forcibly loud laughter as she all but climbed into Drew’s lap trying to gain his attention. On the bright side, it looked like the sun was trying to put in an appearance.

It was a relief when they finally arrived. The van had barely parked as Lindsay climbed out, stretching out all the kinks and aches the ride had caused in her body. It felt good to be out of town. A change of scenery, the not-so-fresh air of a busy town that reminded her of her home in New York. If only there wasn’t the likelihood of Armageddon overshadowing the trip.

“How long until you two take off on your big secret mission?” Toyah asked.

Simon checked his watch. “About an hour, I guess.”

“You guys want to grab a drink or something before you take off?” Drew asked in general, but his look was clear the invite was directed at Lindsay. “There’s a diner across the street.”

The five of them crossed the street to the diner. It was still early enough that the place wasn’t too busy. “There’s a free booth,” said Drew grabbing Lindsay by the hand and leading her to the empty seats. She felt a stab of satisfaction as he pulled her into the booth next to him, much to Becky’s obvious irritation.

The rest of them sat, Becky and Toyah carefully arranging themselves on either side of a nervous looking Simon. They ordered their drinks and lapsed into a stifling silence, none of them able to think of common ground to begin a conversation over. At least once the drinks had arrived it gave them all something to focus on. Lindsay took a small sip of her orange juice. It was sharp and bitter, not that she had much taste for it anyway. Now that they were actually here and the time until their meeting was ticking away, her nerves were starting to get the best of her.

“Okay, I have just got to ask and I know everyone here is wondering,” Becky began, her upbeat tone causing Lindsay’s already knotted stomach to tie itself into double knots. “What is the deal with you and Simon? I mean, you act like you‘re only
