âWHY WONâT YOU COME WITH us?â Sasha asked in Russian the following morning. âI donât want to go if you donât come.â
Nina wasnât about to belittle his fear. Heâd known only privation and loneliness in Russia. For him it was a place of internal exile, of indifference and friendlessness. For her it was a place of privilege and duplicity, loss and danger. Good reasons for neither of them to return.
The boy deserved a chance to overcome his demons. Maybe he wouldnât enjoy the trip, but that wasnât as important as discovering his father wouldnât abandon him.
She didnât want to rob Sasha of that confidence. Jarrod had made it clear he wouldnât take the child without her, that he needed her, not just as a translator but to help his son feel more secure.
And what about his sister? If Jarrod didnât go over there, she might be deprived of an opportunity, too. Did she remember having a brother? Did she wonder what had happened to him? Did she miss him?
It had been sixteen years since Nina had been home. Sheâd read every article, every interview, every human interest story she could find about the political, economic and social upheavals that had taken place since sheâd left.
She was being selfish, she concluded.
âGuess what?â she told him. âIâm going with you.â
âYay!â Sasha shouted.
Later, when he was outside playing with Laika, Nina informed Jarrod of her decision. He took her hands and smiled, making her wonder if he could see her nervousness. Then he kissed her, and for a moment she lost herself in the stimulating sensation of his lips on hers and the secure feeling of his arms around her.
âThank you,â he murmured, releasing her.
She was left to wonder that night if he was referring to the trip or the kiss.
