Before Ben even opened his eyes he reached out, and in his heart he knew he would only find a cold sheet… but he did it anyway. As much as he knew she wouldn’t be there, that it shouldn’t hurt, it did.

He spied the time on the clock.

8:18AM.

She shouldn’t have left yet, but he would bet every dime to his name that she had hightailed it out of the hotel as soon as she could get her stuff thrown haphazardly into her bags.

She’d told him she loved him.

He scratched his chest and stretched. What the fuck was he supposed to do with that? He felt…something, but he wasn’t ready to call it love. He didn’t know what the hell to call it, but it was tied up with his grief for Luke and his family angst, tied up with the idea that his final hike was over, his job in Venezuela done.

She’d been so sleepy, he finally pushed it out of his mind and told himself she didn’t know what she was saying.

If she felt it, she would get over it. She had to, because he wasn’t good for anyone right now. Even if he wished he was.

Because if he could give himself to anyone, it would be her.

He dragged himself to the shower and stood under the hot spray until it ran cold. He scrubbed away any last hint of her lingering on his skin and told himself it was for the best.

He needed to get Peru going with Juan. He needed to explore a few areas back in the States for viability for the U.S. branch of Steel Force Adventures. He needed to figure out what was next.

He needed to reassure Madison that he had fulfilled Luke’s last wishes.

After that, he’d head back to San Francisco for a hefty dose of home, and time with his sister and his nieces.
