Chapter 6

All the years of dreaming of what kissing Declan would be like didn’t prepare Lillian for the reality of it. With his lips pressed against hers, she could barely think straight. But just as quick as the kiss began, it ended. Declan pulled away, her eyes popped open, and she looked up at him with awestruck confusion written on her features. Then a single word fell out of her lips before she could stop it. “Wow.” If she could have reached forward and pulled it back in, she would have.

Though Declan was never one to brag about his abilities, he had been complimented on his lip skills on more than one occasion. However, he had to admit that what happened between him and Lillian hadn’t been strictly his talents. It had been the unique combination of skill and chemistry that had led to a combustible heat.

When he pulled away, it was because he was certain that if he didn’t break their kiss right then and there, he wasn’t sure he would have the strength to do it later. Lillian saying ‘wow’ only confirmed everything that he was feeling during the kiss himself. “I’ll second that,” he said with a smile.

Lillian’s cheeks flushed red with embarrassment. Every reason that she’d ever thought of to not tell Declan about her feelings came flooding back in. They had just given their friendship a violent shove into unchartered territory and now everything was going to change. Panic rose up in her throat, or was that vomit? “I think I need a minute.” Lillian backed away from him and the connection they’d just made, trying to distance herself from the very thing she thought she wanted.

“Sure, take your time,” he nodded, raising his hands. “I’m going to see if anyone needs anything and start cleaning up.”

She didn’t bother to take a look at the time. It had already been midnight when she sidled up to the bar in the first place and nearly an hour had passed since then. Lillian waited for Declan to take his leave and then she fled for the exit. He might have thought she was going to use the restroom or get some fresh air, but she was going home. She needed space and she needed her bed.

When this night had started, Lillian was mourning the loss of a relationship that had never truly formed. Or, more accurately, the loss of what could have been. Now as she made her way home in the darkened streets of 1:00 am, she didn’t mourn anything, she just felt confused.

In high school, Lillian thought matters of the heart got easier as you got older. She thought they were only confusing because she was young and didn’t have enough experience to navigate the waters of love. But the truth was, whether she was fourteen years old or twenty-eight, she still had no idea what she was doing. When it was her first boyfriend, Rick, or her twelfth, Oliver, she still felt as lost as ever when it came to relationships.
