We all said goodbye to each other in the shop and Kaelee, Laina, Wade and Byron left. They thought it’d be a bit of fun, but they had no idea a crazy person would be at their meeting. A crazy person who had dreams about dying and black voids. Joe had walked them outside, and I could see his silhouette standing beside another one. Its small frame belonged to Laina. I wondered what they were talking about. Maybe he was asking her on a date? I told myself that would be a good thing. It’d be good if he moved on and met someone new. The smaller silhouette walked away, and Joe pushed through the door, locking it behind him, a small smile on his lips.

“Does Laina think we’re all crazy?” asked Sarah.

“I don’t think so. She said she didn’t know what to expect.” He still had a smile spread across his lips.

“So, did you ask her out?” Sarah teased.

“What? I don’t know what you’re talking about. I just made sure she got to her car safe. I was being a gentleman. There are still a few of us around, you know. Did Byron ask you out?” said Joe.

“No, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” replied Sarah.

Ignoring their teasing argument, Harper turned towards me. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I think so. What does it all mean? If it wasn’t for Joe, I felt like I would’ve simply disappeared and never woken up.”

“I didn’t want to go into it with everyone around. I really didn’t expect something like this to happen. I thought we’d be discussing dreams we’d had during the week. Dreams about flying, our teeth falling out, and finding ourselves naked. Not something as elaborate as this.”

Her words didn’t comfort me at all. Why had I fallen so easily into the dream? Why couldn’t I have been like everyone else? I’d been convincing myself I was normal, just like any other Dreamer. But even the Dreamers in the room were shocked.

“How about you all come in and get comfortable, and we’ll have a quick session before you leave,” Harper suggested, and we followed her into the back room and sat on the cushions once again.

Harper immediately began interpreting my dream. “Walking through the forest is about coming to terms with your emotional self, understanding your own nature. Then going into the stream shows you need to be a part of something, which will enable you to interact with like-minded people.”

“That doesn’t sound that bad,” said Sarah.

“How did it all turn so crazy?” I asked.

“I think your fears crept in. The void was that fear. You need space for yourself to work out what you want in life. You’re afraid of the unknown and are scared of losing control of your life again, losing yourself.”

That was my fear, broadcast to those I cared about the most. What the MMC was doing scared the living hell out of me, and the fact I would’ve died if it hadn’t been for Cameron’s cure, scared me even more.
