Chapter Eleven

Daphne fixed her gaze out of the backseat window of the car and tried to focus on the blur of yellow as other taxis streaked past them and the dizzying lights of the city skyline. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t shake the fluttery sensation that had swept over her when she’d spotted Jack waiting for her outside the Veil building.

He’d come back for her.

It was such a silly thing, just a small gesture that to anyone else, wouldn’t have been a big deal at all. But to Daphne, it meant a lot—the world, almost. Jack knew it would. He knew why too.

Daphne should’ve kept her mouth shut about Emerson Academy, her father, the whole lot of it. Her fake fiancé knew far too much about her now. That’s the only reason he was getting under her skin so badly—the only reason why her knees had gone wobbly when she’d spied the look on his face as he’d seen her in the dress for the first time.

This was all the gown’s fault. The gown, plus Daphne spilling her guts to her work husband. That’s what she wanted so desperately to believe, anyway.

She did her best to paste an impassive look on her face as she swiveled to face him, but the sight of him in that tuxedo made her mouth water. He may as well have been a cupcake. The suit had to be custom-made. After a decade in the bridal business, Daphne knew a bespoke tuxedo when she saw one.

“We’re all set on the backstory we came up with, right?” she said.

Maybe if she reminded them both of the night’s actual purpose, she’d be able to focus on what really mattered—her career, Veil, their undercover series of articles. Not the way her heart was beginning to feel like a bird trapped in a cage every time she looked at Jack.

He nodded. “You work as a personal shopper at Bloomingdale’s, and we met when I came in to buy a suit.”

Had they stolen that particular meet cute from an old episode of Friends? Yes. Yes, they had. But Jack assured her that his parents and their crowd weren’t hanging around in their sweats at night binge watching old sitcoms. Their loss, as far as Daphne was concerned.

“It’s been a whirlwind courtship,” Daphne added. Hence the speedy engagement—so fast that he hadn’t gotten around to telling his family about his new relationship status.

“Love at first sight.” He brushed a strand of hair from her eyes, and his fingertips traced a shivering trail down the side of her face.

Daphne’s breath bottled up in her throat. “It’s amazing what silly things some people might let themselves believe, isn’t it?”

“Ridiculous,” he said. “Utterly laughable.”

But neither of them seemed to be laughing.

Jack’s forehead crinkled, as if he’d just remembered something important. Like the fact that this entire narrative was completely made up. He moved his hand away from her cheek and reached into his pocket.

“I almost forgot. I have something for you,” he said.
