Chapter 7
Emily got dressed before Olivia and ran inside the kitchen. Her aunt was almost done cooking. As soon as she saw Emily, she smiled and said, âSeems they werenât giving you enough food. I will have to make sure that you eat twice as much food as you used to eat earlier.â
Emily said, âAunt Charlotte, we need to talk before Olivia comes.â
She continued, âDad had sealed the hall of truth shut and Olivia would have only been able to use it, if you would have used it before her.â
Charlotte dropped whatever she was doing and said, âEmily, I know I made a mistake, but I had a reason.â
Emily sighed and said, âYou and I both know how messed up our family is, and this is going to get even worse after Olivia finds out. What on earth will we do if something happens?â
Her aunt held her hands and said, âWe will get through it because we are together.â
Emily said, âAunt Charlotte, give me one good reason to trust you.â
Charlotte said with tears in her eyes, âEmily, I have been suffering. The effect of the curse is increasing. I cannot stop it. It has become irregular but when it happens, I lose control.â
Emily looked into her eyes and said, âI want to help you, but the hall of truth does not give correct answers anymore. It causes quarrels between us.â
Charlotte said, âI only wanted to try and find a cure to the curse and so I opened it.â
Emily said, âYou shouldnât have performed the
ritual.â
The aunt said, âI couldnât let a little toddler die!â
Emily said, âI feel like there is something, someone behind the hall of truth. Only people would play with othersâ naivety.â
The aunt said, âWeâll find a way.â She continued after a long sigh, âYou donât know how much this curse is affecting me. It is getting weirder and weirder day by day. It even affects my health now.â
Emily said, âTell me everything.â
Her aunt had tears in her eyes. She said, âI have been vomiting blood and my anger issues have started to increase.â
She paused and then continued, âEarlier, I used to get angry for some time and then I would be fine. Now, everything is absurd. The other day, I was at the grocery store and this lady bumped into me. Ideally, I would let it go but I donât know how, I started hitting her with whatever I could find. She was admitted to the hospital. Thankfully, somebody from the other world came and compelled the police to not arrest me.â
Emily kept a hand on her shoulder but before she could say anything, her aunt said again, âThere is something that I need you to see.â
Her aunt let her to the basement.
There was a table in the centre and, on top of that, was a dead man. His clothes were drenched in blood. The frightened look on his face made Emily gasp. His body had made the whole basement reek. Charlotte looked at Emily and said, âI killed an innocent man.
