CHAPTER 12

Did she look alright? Since when did she even care what anyone thought? Jace’s mum and brothers had already met her. Seen her in work clothes. But she’d still tried on every top and every pair of pants and skirt and dress and till couldn’t decide what to wear.

The sound of Jace’s car pulling up outside settled that what she had on would have to do. Capri-length jeans and a white, wide-necked top with splashes of pink that matched her hair. She hastily put in her favorite gold hoops and the gold bangle her parents had sent her. The last gift from them.

Jace knocked on the door and she opened it, awkwardly trying to hold the box of beer in one arm and her bag slung over her shoulder.

He took the beer, giving her a quick once over and grinning.

‘Checking that I’m not paint-spattered?’ She’d put in a few hours at the studio that morning in an attempt to take her mind of the impending lunch.

‘Nope. Just checking you out. You know I like looking at you.’ He turned and walked to the car, putting the beer in the back of the pick-up.

Oh, she knew. And she liked it. She’d liked the way he’d watched her pleasure herself, the way it made her feel sexy and a little bit bad.

Jace’s truck gleamed suspiciously clean. Had he washed it just for her? Did he want to make a good impression? Should she be worried about that? Maybe this whole going-to-the-family barbecue thing was a bad idea. A step beyond neighbors-with-benefits. Too late now.

Green countryside sped by. So different from the office towers and brownstones of New York and she wasn’t missing it at all. She’d loved it while she was there. It had served its purpose. Now her purpose was here.

In Milton, she meant.

Not with Jace.

Her gallery. Building a name in her home country. Jace was just an unexpected surprise.

‘Here we are,’ Jace broke into her reverie. ‘I have to warn you. Since Blair got married, Mum gets a gleam in her eye any time she meets a single woman. And the boys aren’t much better. So don’t be surprised if there’s not-so-subtle comments.’

Amy barely had time to take in the beautiful surroundings, the lush, green paddocks, the line of trees in the distance which must be where the river ran through the property, when a miniature tornado in shorts and a superhero cape hurtled towards them.

‘Uncle Jace.’ The toddler wrapped his arms around Jace’s legs. Jace picked up his nephew and hoisted her onto his shoulders.

‘How you doing, Billy? This is Amy. She’s come to have lunch with us.’

‘Hi, Billy.’ Amy had absolutely no experience with children and was at a loss as to what else to say. Her New York friends were into their art or their other careers and having a busy social life. None had children.

He was followed by a pre-adolescent girl.

‘And this is Eden.’

The young girl looked right into Amy’s eyes. ‘Is this your girlfriend?’

Amy hadn’t factored kids into the day.
