Chapter 20

W’rath bowed low to the Clan of Thorn and Spine’s dread goddess. Already he considered the situation well in hand as she hadn’t already destroyed them. Now if only Foxfire could get a better grip on his terror. No doubt the lad’s fear-soaked sweat had alerted her to their presence.

“Madam,” he said, rising, “I bid you greetings.” He was pleased his use of Draconic had not gone rusty from disuse. He bowed again. “I apologize for our intrusion upon your solitude, but our need is great, and we could think of no other way to contact you.”

Some slight, unseen shift of the creature’s position sent a scree of treasure cascading down around the elves’ feet. W’rath heard Foxfire’s sharp intake of breath. The Wood Elf tried to draw his stance in tighter in an effort to avoid accidental contact with an errant broach or pearl.

The hiss of words drew W’rath’s attention back to the dragon. Her voice had the aspect of dry parchment rustling in the breeze. “Nearly ten lifetimes have passed since I last laid eyes on you but neither my eyes nor memory fail me. You dare seek my assistance after what you did to my people?”

Surely, I didn’t hear that quite right. W’rath placed his fist over his heart, a sign of obeisance the dragons used with one another. “I dare only because the threat facing us both requires such boldness. Apologies alone will never make up for the foul treachery my ancestors visited upon you but please hear me out for I believe we have a common enemy this day. It is my hope we may aid one another in forging a new future.”

The dragon’s eyelids dropped to half-mast. “Ancestors?”

W’rath tensed. Her use of you earlier had set off an internal alarm but he’d hoped he’d misheard, or that she simply used the singular to encompass all elf kind. After all, he hadn’t spoken Draconic since the last time he spoke to a dragon. A blue dragon. Oh, bother.

“What’s going on?” Foxfire whispered.

“Do you have a good grip, lad?”

Foxfire made a pitiful, almost childlike whimper. “Yes.”

“Smashing.” W’rath teleported.

They reappeared close to the medical facility with its mummified orc. In the distance, something wholly primeval and blood chilling screamed. Dirt and debris tumbled down the hall. Bits of loose wire and crumbling ceiling rained down on the elves and the floor shuddered while the air itself vibrated with the intensity of the creature’s hatred.

“I smell you, elf spawn!” The blue’s fury funneled down the hallway. “Betrayer!”

“What in the Hells did you say to her? What happened to your aura of benevolence?” Foxfire asked, clutching W’rath’s belt so tight, the Shadow Elf’s spine creaked. The Wood Elf dragged him several steps as he took in their surroundings. “Why are we still here? Get us out!”

“No,” W’rath said. “I have questions for her.”

“And I’m pretty sure she has no interest in answering them.”

“She will.” W’rath growled.

“Damn it! You said even the First couldn’t take on a dragon alone,” Foxfire said.
