âWould you just put that thing away?â Abe asked in annoyance. Phineas had been doing the same thing for nearly an hour: pulling his cellphone out of his pocket, checking it, frowning, and putting it away. Over and over again, he awaited a text from the only sender he cared about at the moment. He needed a distraction, but his beautiful distraction was busy with work.
âSorry.â He mumbled, tucking his cellphone into his pocket again.
Along with his older brothers, Phineas waited in the spacious living room of their parentsâ house for word from their mother. His father had convinced the doctors to let him come home the day prior, insisting he didnât want to die in a hospital bed. The man was persuasive and they eventually caved, so now the Sharman family was watching the moments pass by, knowing they didnât have much more time.
âHeâs texting that girl again.â Cornelius commented with a small grin. âLeave him be, Abe. Heâs been bitten by the love bug.â
âShut up.â Phineas rolled his eyes. His ears heated up and he quickly rubbed at the back of his neck. Apparently none of his brothers had gotten the memo that he was an adult now; teasing him was immature and overrated.
âWhen do we get to meet her?â Dean asked, not bothering to look up from the screen of his phone. Ha! Talk about double standards.
âSoon enough, I imagine.â Phineas replied, glancing at the clock. âWe just felt right now wasnât the time for introductions.â
âAt least sheâs a respectful woman.â Cornelius snorted. âThatâs a refreshing change from...what was her name? Hilda?â
âOh god.â Phineas groaned. Hilda was the last girlfriend, he ever attempted to bring home. Aside from being a gold-digger, which he unfortunately learned too late in the game, she also had a habit of forgetting her mannersâand keeping her legs closed.
âRemember that time Phineas brought her for Christmas dinner and she got absolutely smashed on the egg nog?â Abe added. âWhile it was entertaining to witness, Iâm pretty sure Mother didnât appreciate her loose tongue and vulgar behavior.â
Phineas cringed at the memory. Hilda had gotten a little too affectionate at the dinner table and heâd yet to live that down. Then again, Abe loved torturing him and bringing up his past mistakes.
âWell, may he who is without sin cast the first stone, Abe.â Dean calmly stated. âI think I can recall a time when your beloved wife became too friendly with you in the coat closet.â
âHmm. I think I remember that, too.â Cornelius snickered.
Abeâs smile disappeared as he glared at his brothers.
âShut it, both of you. She was three months pregnant with our oldest and you know it. Pregnancy makes a woman frisky from time to time.â
âSure. Thatâs an excuse to use,â Dean chuckled. âLay off Little Phin, yeah?â
Phineas nodded a silent thanks to his brother. Dean technically would have been the youngest had he never been born, so maybe he felt the need to take up for him because of that fact. Either way, Phineas wasnât complaining.
