THE DRONE OF A DEEP voice drew Evelina down the stairs. Rubbing her sleep dazed eyes, a mirage of spells danced in her head. That would teach her for staying up, practicing so late.

The timber of a man’s voice grew clearer as she traversed the stillness of the kitchen, through fragrant whiffs of strawberry jam and lemon verbena.

A tall, imposing figure came into sight.

Leviticus Wilkes, Frankie’s trainer.

What was he doing here?

“You can turn this train wreck around if you want to.” Leviticus paced before Udora under the yellow porch light, his black duster trailing behind him like a cape. “His parents have great influence. They’d show their appreciation, no doubt.”

“Some things are impossible to undo.”

“It would be in your interest to try.”

Udora’s voice grew quieter. “Is that a threat?”

His dark chiseled features remained bland, but his tone held a cold edge. “I’m just the messenger.”

“The betrothal is off. There is no conflict. They’ll just have to accept it.”

“There are always other prospects.”

“And many fish in the sea.” Udora gave a snort. “Where have I heard that before?”

A long silence prevailed.

“Why are you always so stubborn?”

Udora’s voice sank to a whisper. “Love is more powerful than magic. It comes from a higher force. I can’t change that.”

“You know what she is.” A glint of anger sparked his eye. “Why aren’t you putting a stop to it?”

Evelina stepped into the light. “What am I?”

Udora and Leviticus exchanged startled glances.

Udora moved toward her, wearing a shrouded look. “You may be a very powerful witch someday. That’s all we’re saying.”

“What does that mean?” Evelina looked from one of them to the other. “So could Abby or Tally, for that matter. So could any of us!”

Leviticus opened his mouth, but Udora cut him off. “Exactly!” She flashed a satisfied smile. “It is yet to be determined.”

Leviticus leveled a dark look on Udora. “Let us hope by then it isn’t too late.”

“Say goodbye to Mr. Wilkes, my dear. He was just leaving.”

Poof!

He was gone.

But, not before he flashed Udora a hot glare.

It was hard to say what had happened. Either Udora popped him out, or he did it himself. The scent of cedar was all that remained.

Evelina opened her mouth to ask, but Udora cut in with forced brightness. “It’s getting on—best you hurry. You don’t want to be late.”

“Thanks for sticking up for me.”

“I remember what it was like at your age.”

Evelina tried to picture Udora as a teenager. “You do?”

“My mind is quite sound.” Udora’s lips curved into a wry smile. “The body ages—a strong spirit does not.”

She was certainly that, which, made Evelina wonder all the more, as she scrambled into her park uniform, about the younger Udora.

If only she was a Time Keeper.

She’d be able be able to time skip and see for herself.

Maybe Frankie knew.

Maybe he’d take her sometime.

It’s not like they hadn’t broken that rule before.

Her blood bubbled, as memories flashed through her brain.

The thought of a forbidden adventure with Frankie made her flesh quiver down to the tips of her toes.
