Chapter Ten

Jolie’s hand shook as she lifted her coffee cup to her lips. Her knees ached from where she’d crashed onto the concrete landing in the stairwell of Devin’s condo, yet her lips quirked upward as she glanced across the office at Devin.

At least they were alive.

She was having a tough time keeping her mind on the conversation at hand. After the terrifying events of last night, Devin had asked his family to meet this morning. As tired as she was, it wouldn’t take much for her to burst into tears.

“I’m glad you could all make it.” Devin stood and paced, his steps measured, forceful, his expression serious. “The situation has escalated past dangerous to deadly.” He pounded his fist into his palm. “None of us are safe until we catch the man responsible.”

Jolie leaned her head back against her chair. Devin had insisted she attend this family meeting. Not that she didn’t want to know what was going on, but she was on edge both emotionally and physically, having downed two cups of coffee already in an attempt to stay alert.

“My team is sifting through evidence as we speak.” Ash ran a hand through his hair. He needed a shave and his eyes were as bloodshot as Devin’s. “Whoever did this is leaving very little for us to go on. We canvassed the areas around both Jolie’s apartment and Devin’s condo, but there wasn’t any other evidence. Most people were in bed asleep and didn’t hear anything until the police arrived, sirens blaring, at Jolie’s, or when the bomb exploded at Devin’s.”

“Not good enough. There has to be something.” Devin glanced at Jolie’s face. “We can’t wait until one of us dies.”

Jolie’s hand went up to the cut on her cheekbone she’d gotten from falling into the stairwell. She was so thankful that the steel door had protected them from the explosion. Though the handmade bomb had not been that powerful, there was no telling how badly they would have been hurt had it gone off with them beside it.

Devin had a few bruises, too, having thrown himself on top of Jolie to protect her from the blast. As he stared across at Jolie, his hands tightened into fists. “I want everyone to travel in pairs, safety in numbers.”

“You two were together last night as a pair, and it didn’t help you.” Natalie’s brows rose, her expression challenging Devin. “I can’t wait around for one of you to escort me everywhere I go. I refuse to succumb to this maniac’s mind games.”

Devin’s mouth was set in grim lines. “He’s passed the point of mind games and gone on to physical violence.” He looked tired.

Jolie wished she could take all his worry away from him and shoulder it herself. She knew he felt responsible for his entire family, but how could he continue under the burden without crumpling?

“We can’t run scared. We’re Kendalls—it’s not in us to be afraid and hide.” Natalie planted her hands on her hips. “I’m not hiding.
