The travellers pressed on towards their next destination. After 10 minutes of walking, they arrived at the entrance of a new cave, and Kyle heard the sound of roaring flames. Ravena, who was flying ahead, soared higher to get a view of how many dragons were inside. She squawked, signalling her findings to the group.

“It’s not good. They are everywhere, some big and some small,” Ravena reported. “The dragons are randomly breathing out flames.” Kyle was almost looking forward to seeing a dragon, he had never seen one.

“Fire is a big fear of mine,” Jasper said, shaking his mane and flaring his nostrils.

“If it helps to keep you calm, I will ride upon your back,” Jo offered.

“Thank you. It may just help me,” Jasper replied gratefully.

The group slowly made their way into the cave, remembering what they had learnt before setting off - that dragons will only attack if they feel threatened. Kyle gasped with amazement. There were dragons of every type and in a vast array of colours in the cave. Dragons climbed the walls, flew past them, and some lay on the rocks sleeping. Bartholomew spotted several dragonesses nesting their unborn in their eggs, while some were nursing their newborns.

“Best to stay away from the nursing mothers, they may think you have come for their young or their eggs. The eggs are sold at the illegal markets, at Katia’s stronghold.”

Kyle was taken aback by Bartholomew’s statement. “How wrong to take the babies away from their mothers.”

The journey through the den was going safely until a dragon jumped in front of the group. Fang snarled at the dragon who was staring right at him.

“At ease, Fang. Remember, show no danger. I know your instinct may be to attack and fight, but you will be no match for the dragon’s fiery breath,” cautioned Bartholomew.

The dragon, not much bigger than Fang, circled him with entrails of smoke wisping out of its breath. More dragons had lined the path on either side of the travellers. Bartholomew reached inside his pocket and pulled out a long silver whistle, blowing it loudly. Kyle watched in amusement as Bartholomew’s cheeks puffed out.

The travellers themselves could not hear the sound emanating from the whistle, but the dragons could. Some of the dragons shrieked in response to the high-pitched noise and retreated from the group.

“Bartholomew, what is it you have?” Jo looked intrigued.

“It’s a dragon whistle, given to me when I was a small boy by my mother; she told me one day I would need this. I didn’t understand why, I do now.”

The remainder of the dragons had backed away to the recesses of the cave as they waited for the group to pass through. Now, they were free to continue their journey, but they knew that more dangers lay ahead.

“That wasn’t too bad.” Kyle sat down to rest on a rock, feeling relieved but also grateful for having seen the magnificent creatures.

“Our next encounter is with the Rock Men, so as long as we stay away from the walls where they dwell, we should be fine,” Bartholomew said.
