The crew of the Whisper was extremely disappointed to be traveling through the night stuck in whisper mode again, but none as much as Gideon who, immediately after leaving, walked into the command center and kicked over a chair. Everyone stood silent, waiting to make sure he was finished with his tantrum and then finally he said, “Izzy?”

“Yes, Gid,” she always called him Gid when she knew he was stressing about something.

“Find Hunchy a place to sleep tonight, would you?” Then he interrupted himself and turned to address the hunchback, “You know, it doesn’t seem right that we keep calling you that. What’s your name, anyway?”

“Hunchy or Hunchback is fine by me, and I’ll sleep out on the deck if that’s fine by you.”

Wyatt chuckled, “Outside?”

“That’s correct,” the hunchback said with a sly look in his eye. No one had ever seen the other eye, what with his hooded cloak always hiding it. Elias was beginning to wonder if he even had one.

He listened to Bogan’s usual muttering from his night terrors about his leg, which made his dream seem petty, then suddenly it hit him. The hunchback was supposed to tell him about Mellontas and the stowaway and why he’d killed Abner.

He jumped out of bed and slid into Charlie’s jacket shirtless, hoping that Hunchy hadn’t fled with the stowaway. Then he ran out to the main deck to wake up the sleeping beast, but he wasn’t sleeping at all. Hunchy was petting Casper, who was perched on the railing. The sight of the two reminded him of another nagging question. Why was Casper so nice to Hunchy, and why did he obey him? Answers, he was going to demand answers or turn the hunchback over to the Whisper crew that night. His mind raced with every question possible as he walked out towards the hunchback.

The cool night air from back at the harbor had now turned frigid and pushed away every cloud from the sky as they sailed below the star-speckled heavens. Elias was not slow in his stride and hoped his full steam approach would be intimidating enough to pluck out the answers he needed. He stopped next to
