Sitting on the steep, forested Lenape Hill—as in the Lenapes, Lenape Landing’s first family—with a master view of the city below, Lenape Hall had once been the seat of upward social mobility. Nancy duBarre Lenape-Carnahan had held salons and parties and other gaieties in the Hall, once upon a century.
Then she’d passed away from silver poisoning that had looked like mere organ failure, and the Hall had fallen into quiet disuse. George, it seemed, had never liked the old pile, closet Marxist that he was. And with his beloved Nancy dead, he’d seen no point in continuing on there.
But for the grounds- and house-keepers, the Hall had seen few visitors in nearly one hundred years. George had, it was said, only kept the Hall in case either of his children had wanted to take up residence, but it seemed neither had. Evelyn was always traveling, never staying anywhere long enough to put down roots, and James, though he’d stayed in Lenape Landing, had chosen to live in the penthouse of the LaMarque Building, down on Lakeshore Drive.
The driveway of Lenape Hall was nearly half a mile long and lined with cars of different socio-economic levels, from beaters to Bentleys. Nathan drove them past all these, right up to the steps of the Hall, where several young men and women in the red jackets of valets waited to park the SUV.
“Are they, um, Loups, too?”
Des nodded.
“Volunteers,” Jake chimed in. “Thierry LaFours’s Pack, most likely.”
“I can see they’ve come up in the world,” Des sniffed, looking for a moment exactly like her father, or so Ruby thought. Then Des opened her door before the tallest young LaFours could, hopping out with a hard look for the boy, who couldn’t have been more than seventeen. He ignored her glare and held out a hand for Ruby at the same time Des did.
Ignoring them both, Ruby slid toward Jake’s door and accepted his hand. He tipped her a stage-y wink and offered her his arm. She took it, blushing at the knowing look on his long face. Together, followed by Nathan and Philomena, and finally a sulking, hunch-shouldered Des, they climbed the shallow steps to the ivy-covered portico.
