Chapter Sixteen
“Where the fuck is he?” Warner screamed the words, spittle flying from his mouth.
Kell stood with the other employees in front of Warner and Marek. The club was empty of patrons. Closing early meant lost revenue which no doubt added to Warner’s rage. He’d ordered all of them onto the streets to look for Dieter, but the kid was long gone.
“Someone must have seen something. The little shit either ran or someone took him. His phone’s off.” Warner paced. “That guy he was talking to, the one in the harness, the one who fucking tripped me up… He set off the alarm, then knocked me over as a distraction.”
Was he right? “That might have been an accident,” Kell said, then wondered what the fuck he was doing. Gethin had walked away from him, Kell owed him nothing. The guy hadn’t even answered his phone. Kell had tried three times and each time it had gone to voice mail, and on every occasion he’d deleted his call history just in case.
Marek stared at him. “You don’t set off a fire alarm by accident.”
“I meant tripping up the boss was an accident. It was chaos in here, everyone fighting to get out. A lot of people got knocked over. Me included. We all thought there was a fire. Dieter ran like everyone else.”
Marek came right up to him and put his mouth against Kell’s ear. “You have that guy waiting at your place?”
Oh fuck. Kell poured indignation into his voice. “No. The only contact we had was me asking him where he bought his harness.”
Reuben was checking the cameras. Kell was relieved they’d back up what he’d said.
“You followed him,” Marek said.
“You told me to. I went into the Back Passage and I couldn’t see him. Next time I did, he was on his own in here, leaning against the wall, talking to Dieter. Then Dieter went back to the boss.”
Alec came into the room and approached Warner.
“Anything?” Warner asked.
“The camera in the Back Passage isn’t working,” Alec said.
Warner clenched his fists. “Why the fuck not?”
“I don’t know. I’ll have to call someone in to check. The camera on the exterior caught Dieter leaving after the alarm went off. He was the middle of a load of guys, part of a group that turned left, then the camera lost him.”
“What about the guy who knocked me over?”
“He was pushed toward you by the crowd. He tripped and brought you down. Looked like an accident. He was one of the last ones out and turned right.”
Kell was relieved Gethin hadn’t been caught doing something he shouldn’t have. Maybe he’d arranged to meet Dieter and had the sense not to do it right outside the club. But that didn’t sit comfortably in Kell’s stomach.
“The kid thought there was fire, and ran. Tula ran too,” Marek said.
“But I came back.” Tula sidled up to Warner and was pushed away.
“Could he be trying to get your house?” Marek asked Warner.
“It’s possible. He doesn’t have a key, but he might be hanging around outside.
