CHAPTER NINE

KATIE was glad when the ambulance dropped her off outside the hospital. Traveling back in her wet clothes hadn’t made for the most comfortable of journeys. Fortunately, their patient seemed to be holding his own so that was some consolation. She left Christos to supervise the unloading and headed into the department, smiling when she saw Maria’s surprise as she walked through the door.

‘Katie! What’s happened?’ the older nurse exclaimed in dismay. ‘You’re soaking wet.’

‘I took an unscheduled dip in the sea.’ She glanced down at her wet clothes and grimaced. ‘I couldn’t borrow a spare set of scrubs to go home in, could I? The driver might not let me get on the bus looking like this.’

‘Of course you can.’ Maria hurried around the desk then stopped dead when Christos appeared. She shook her head when she saw the state of him. ‘Not you as well. What on earth have you two been up to?’

‘We got stuck in a cave with the tide coming in,’ he explained succinctly. He turned to Katie and her heart seemed to leap into her throat when she saw the concern in his eyes. ‘You should get changed. You’ll catch a chill if you don’t find something dry to wear.’

‘That’s just what we were about to do when you arrived,’ Maria said firmly, immediately taking charge. She ushered Katie into the theatre suite and opened the door to the women’s changing room. ‘There’s clean scrubs on the shelf. Just help yourself.’

‘Thanks.’ Katie smiled gratefully as she took a clean set of clothes off the shelf. ‘How did you get on in here? It must have been really busy.’

‘Oh, it was fine,’ Maria said airily. ‘What about you? How did you get on?’

‘It was a bit hectic at times but we coped,’ Katie replied, helping herself to a towel as well.

‘I didn’t mean that.’ Maria smiled. ‘I’m more interested in how you and Christos got on—together.’

Katie felt a wash of heat run up her face when she realised what Maria meant. ‘Christos was in charge and I carried out his instructions,’ she said carefully. ‘What more can I say?’

‘A lot.’ Maria grinned at her. ‘I’ve known Christos for a long time and I’ve never seen him look so concerned about a member of staff before. It’s obvious that there’s something going on between you two.’

‘There’s nothing going on between me and Christos,’ Katie denied hurriedly. Although she liked Maria, she certainly didn’t want to be drawn into a discussion about her relationship with Christos.

Her heart lurched at the thought of her and Christos having a relationship and she rushed on. ‘Honestly.’

‘If you say so.’ Maria didn’t sound convinced but she obviously decided not to pursue the subject and left.

Katie took a shower then put on the clean scrubs. She found a plastic bag for her wet uniform then went back to the department to sign out. The day shift had all left now and the night staff were on duty. She checked how Eric Van der Halk was doing and was relieved when she was told that he had been sent to Theatre.
