CHAPTER 19

I had a lovely evening with Ben. After we finished at the pub, we went for a walk around the little village. Which although charming, didn’t match Cadenbury. We may live in a town, but it has a village feel to it, and I like the fact I know pretty much everyone there. But wandering around this village with Ben was lovely nonetheless.

I wanted to bring up the topic of Tim, but I didn’t want to spoil the evening, so I shelved that thought until after Ben’s birthday.

But now it’s morning. I manage to crawl out of bed without waking Ben, and I’m sat in the lounge, wrapping his birthday presents. Thankfully someone brought the boxes up here and left them for me. I’m also impressed with myself that I remembered to order a card and wrapping paper, and someone has kindly left me tape and scissors, two things that I did forget.

I’m secretly proud of the presents I brought Ben, and we’ll see how much of a nerd he really is when he opens them. I finish wrapping the last one, seeing he has a small pile from me. I look at the presents and wonder if I brought him enough, though. Was there more that I could have gotten him?

I look up when I hear a noise and see zombie Cassie walking into the lounge.

“Hey, Bro, what are you doing up?” I ask him.

“Couldn’t sleep,” he tells me, flopping down in the chair he’s claimed as his and curling up, resting his head on the arm of the chair.

“Why? You always sleep well.”

“Just a lot on my mind.”

I look at him, and his eyes seem sad. “Anything I can help with?”

He shakes his head. “No,” he says on a sigh. “Just family stuff.”

I’m hurt for a moment. I thought I was family, but then I get annoyed with myself. Cassie can have whatever family he wants.

“Bummer,” I reply, not sure what else I can say.

Cassie suddenly sits up. “Oh, that sounded rude. You’re my family, Temp. You know you are. You and Titus and everyone in this house. I meant just Lizzy and Norris stuff.”

I feel better now. I didn’t realise I still had hang-ups about families.

“What’s up with them? Did your brother go home?”

“He did. Father tried to kick him out, but he refused to go. Mum is complaining about not having magic and wanting it back.”

“Have you told Tie?”

“No,” he says. “I’m not sure if I should.”

“Not sure if you should what?” Tie asks, walking into the lounge in his pjs.

“Hey, bro. What are you doing up?” I ask him. I look behind him expecting to see Kean, but he’s not there.

“Kean is still snoring his head off. My magic told me you guys were upset, so I came to see what I can do to help,” he says, sitting down on the sofa.

“I’m not upset. Cass is, though,” I say, not wanting Tie or Cass to know about my moment of hurt.

Tie looks at me for a moment, and I smile at him before he turns to look at Cass.
