Chapter 9

I’ve been smiling all day.

I’d like to think it was because I had a good sleep, but that would be a lie.

I know why. I just can’t bring myself to fully admit it. A part of me doesn’t want to come out and accept the truth. That something has changed between me and Ethan.

There’s no hostility between us anymore. Crazy how it only took me deciding to be nice to him for it to happen. Like he was just waiting for a cease-fire.

Does he want us to be friends again? It seems like it’s heading that way.

No, I’m not going to think about what Sophie said to the both of us last night. First of all, it was completely ridiculous. Like what even made her say that? Secondly, it was so embarrassing.

I don’t even know how I managed to keep a straight face when Ethan drove me home. He was probably just as embarrassed. I guess he was just better at hiding than I was. Didn’t he tease me of blushing? That made it even more embarrassing.

So, no, I’m not going to think about it. “Nope, nope, nope,” I say loudly, popping some chips into my mouth.

I’m in the living room with my sister, watching To All the Boys I've Loved Before. It’s one of the few movies we both agree on. Even Mom loves it.

Across the couch, Scarlett turns to me with wide eyes, looking genuinely scared. “You’ve been smiling nonstop. Now, you’re talking to yourself. Should I call Mom?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” I snap at her. Then shake my head and chuckle lightly.

Ugh. Get a hold of yourself.

Scarlett mutters something under her breath, then picks up her phone from the coffee table.

Not even a minute later, my phone chimes. I frown at it, then at her. Did she text me? But her eyes are now glued to the TV.

Still frowning, I grab it and read the text on the screen.

Your sister said you’ve been smiling all day. Is that a call for help?

My heart starts to race. It’s an unknown number, but I have a feeling that I know who it is. I still pretend to ask. Who’s this?

Ethan.

I knew it. I toss a glare at Scarlett, who remains oblivious. Did she give my number to him?

What if he already had it?

Only one way to find out.

Me: Where did you get my number?

Ethan: I have my sources.

Me: I think I can count those sources with one hand.

Ethan: Sure you can. But don’t change the subject. What has you in a good mood? Did something happen at the party last night?

Me: Oh, yeah. Soph and Lev got drunk. *eye-roll emoji* Seriously, weren’t you there? You know what happened.

Ethan: *thinking face emoji* Well, I vaguely remember Sophie saying something about us dating. Or did I remember that wrong? Nah, I’m pretty sure I heard it.

My cheeks burn as I stare at my phone screen. Did he really have to bring that up? Of all things?

Me: She was drunk. She didn’t know what she was talking about.
