CHAPTER 13

Rage

As I said in the last chapter, on a Thursday night at Rage it was the who’s who of the Rave Scene. We would often bump into Grooverider, who was at the top of his game now, and we would have a great evening laughing and joking about with Paul and Danny and enjoy lots of attention from star-struck rave scene girls. Pete always jokes of this period when you’d be in VIP and some of the sorts would always come up asking if he was a DJ, MC or Promoter. Pete would always answer, “I work as a telephone engineer at British Telecom but I could still plate your fanny and fuck you up the arse if you’re up for it.” Then he’d walk off in fits of laughter.

As time went on, it did become a bit jarring for him I think. It’s bad enough people asking you for drugs all the time because of what you look like, now you’ve got these birds on the scene who seem to be always sniffing about for guest list and free champagne talking to you just to work their way up to an A lister. Funnily enough thinking back, we would discover that a few of these girls were all right once you got to know them properly.

Pete seemed to always have time for them and listen to them when they got lagging and started bitching on about how used and abused they’d been by one rave scene celebrity or another. I am not sure whether he was all that sympathetic but he would listen all the same and I think that’s where he got the tag ‘Pete Nice’ because I remember Grooverider and Danny always asking why Pete was wasting his time listening to their bullshit. He’d reply that he heard some funny shit and in some cases it led to a bunk up on the odd occasion when he had a few Grant Mitchell from East Enders moments; the ones when you’d drop that line “You’re too good for them babe,” and you got that “ah you’re such a nice bloke” response. That’s when you were IN and before you know it, she’s all over you and then you’re together in the spoon position the following morning. Grooverider, Danny and, Paul would be in stitches at his long-winded game and would laugh at him and say, “You too nice. Just feel dem up and show dem your teeth, you don’t have to converse with dem, you too nice to dem Pete Nice.”

Over the years, we would discover that that lot had a name for almost everyone, so that’s how he became Pete Nice and has been Pete Nice ever since.

With Rage came a few momentous occasions. The raving history books would show you that it was where Goldie first fell in love with Drum and Bass when he was the boyfriend of DJ Kemistry and she brought him down there for the first time. Many people would remember
