The Stanford Five-City Project (FCP) is a long-term field trial designed to reduce cardiovascular disease (C VD) morbidity and mortality and risk. Flora et al. say the study employs a quasi-experimental design … with two treatment communities and three matched control communities. When the FCP was launched in 1978, it began with baseline data collection followed 11/2 years later by a six-year education program. The study is now in its 16th year with CVD monitoring still ongoing.213 Among this program’s major achievements are its successes with media and community organization involvement.

The authors say intervention effects were measured in the following manner:

A cohort of individuals aged 12 to 74 (were) surveyed approximately every 2 years for 8 years, and four cross-sectional samples (were) administered the same survey in years between the cohort surveys. After 51/3 years of the campaign, survey results show that relative to controls the cohort had a 16% decrease in coronary heart disease risk score and a 15% decrease in a composite total CVD mortality risk score. Decreased risk was produced by important changes in knowledge, blood pressure, smoking, and possibly blood cholesterol levels. The largest risk factor changes were achieved in blood pressure reductions and in smoking. Modest changes were achieved in weight control and diet.214
