Na Chia: In Taoism, the coordination and interlocking of the Ten Celestial Stems with the Eight Elements (pa kua), to the end that the first Stem, which is the embodiment of the active or male cosmic force, and the second Stem, which is the reservoir of the passive or female cosmic force, gather in the center and the highest point in the universe.
Nabi: In Hebrew mysticism, an interpreter of oracles, a messenger of the deity or spirit. The Nabis were not magicians, but seers.
Nadir: The lowest point below the Earth; the opposite point to the Zenith. It should not be confused with the Imum Cœli (q.v.).
Nagualism: A mystery cult of Mexico and Central America.
Naiad: In occultism, a nature-spirit or elemental of rivers, lakes and springs.
Nama-rupa: Sanskrit for name (and) form. The phenomenal world, or its conceptual and material aspects.
Name relation: The relation between a symbol (formula, word, phrase) and that which it denotes or of which it is the name.
Narcotic mirror: A round crystal globe filled with magnetized water in which a narcotic powder is dissolved; used for scrying (q.v.).
Nascent: A term applied to a thing or a state of mind at an early stage of its development when it is as yet scarcely recognizable. Nascency is the state of being nascent.
Nastrond: The frozen underworld, abode of the dead, in Nordic and Icelandic mythology.
Nasu: In Zoroastrian demonology, a female demon which feeds on the corpses of the dead and when forced to leave the corpse, leaves it in the shape of a fly.
Nat: In Burmese folklore, a nature-spirit of the forest.
Native: In astrological terminology, the subject of a celestial figure. (Cf. Figure.)
Nativity: In astrology: (1) The birth moment; the instant when the native drew his first breath, thereby commencing a process of blood conditioning that up to that moment had been accomplished through the receptivities of another. During the first days of life, in accordance with the law of adaptability, there ensues a growth of channels of receptivity to cosmic energy which results in a life-pattern of cosmic stimulation. (2) A Figure, or horoscope, cast for a date, moment and place of birth, as distinguished from an Electional or Horary Figure.
Natura naturans: God as the active power of nature. (A term introduced by Averroës, also used by Spinoza.)
Natura naturata: The world as the complex unity of individual things, the substance created by God, the natural naturans. (A term introduced by Averroës and used by Spinoza.)
Natural light: See: Lumen naturale.
Natural magic: The performance of supernatural acts through a more profound knowledge of natural phenomena.
Natural man: A term used by many occult philosophies to designate a human being who “is deceived by physical senses” and is therefore a prey to erroneous beliefs and not immune to physical disease of the flesh. (Cf. spiritual man.)
Natural omen: A sign of some future event drawn from the elements, animals or plants, and applying solely to events independent of human will.
