CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“We have to make sure to keep this separate from Cole’s money,” I muttered, dropping the box on the counter.

“It won’t be hard.” Eli opened the duffel bag, revealing stacks of crisp hundred-dollar bills.

We were in the back room of the coffee shop on campus. The drop off with the Reapers had gone more smoothly than I had expected. Mr. Powell hadn’t been there, which was a surprise. It was a lot of fucking cash to trust us with.

“It’s going to be harder than you think.” River stepped into the room, shutting the door behind him. “Where’s Kat?”

“We dropped her off at her house,” I answered. “And we’ve been helping Richard wash cash for years. We know what we’re doing.”

River raised an eyebrow. “With counterfeit bills?”

“What?” Eli snapped, taking out a stack of the cash and studying it more closely. “They said nothing about it being fake.”

“They called me and told me to pass on the message.” River eyed the money in Eli’s hand. “Half of the bag is filled with fake bills.”

“That’s fucking great,” I mumbled, running a hand down my face.

Eli glanced behind me at the security screens, his eyes widening. “Shit.”

I turned, looking at the screen to see William opening the front door of the coffee shop. I frowned, wondering what he wanted. William didn’t come to campus unless he wanted something. Eli dropped the cash back in the bag and zipped it back up. He heaved it over his shoulder, rushing to the door.

“I’ll keep it in my car for now,” Eli told me before disappearing through the doorway.

River fell into a chair at the small round table, a frown playing on his lips. I stared at him, curious about what was bothering him. For the last few days, he hadn’t been acting like himself. When we witnessed that guy kissing Kat, I’d been ready to hold Eli back. But it had been River who pulled out his gun, looking like he had no qualms about killing that blond asshole right there. He’d been on edge all week about something.

Looking at the screen again, I watched William answer his phone. He held a briefcase and walked back out of sight as he spoke. Figuring we had a few minutes before he came in, I sat down across from River.

“I need a favor.” River messed with his watch, not looking at me.

I scoffed. “And you’re asking me why?”

“Because I talk to three people in this city. And the only other person I can ask is Kat. I trust her. But it could get dangerous, so here I am, swallowing my fucking pride and asking you.”

My suspicion heightened. “Asking me what?”

“Before I tell you, I need you to promise you won’t tell anyone.” He paused. “I know you’ll tell Eli, which is fine. But no one else can know.”

“I’m not saying yes to something unless I know what it is. You might trust Kat, but I don’t fucking trust you.”

Rage gleamed in his eyes as he leaned back in the chair.
