Josh explains his plan, and when he's done, I find I can no longer hold a grudge against the man. He's forgiven entirely in my eyes. My heart aches for his family though. Trevor is crying, his eyes red from all the tears. My throat aches from the pressure of holding back my own.

"Please, Dad," he pleads. "There's got to be another way. Don't do this. You can't do this. We will figure something out, something else out, some other plan. What about Mom? What about me? If you do this, we'll never see you again!"

Josh grips Trevor by both of his shoulders, looking him in the eyes. "Son, I'm sorry. I wish there was another way, but you know there isn't. I promise, it's going to be okay. You're going to be okay, I'm going to make sure of it. Just... just remember all of the things I've taught you, okay? Trust in the Lord, son, do right by your family. Work hard, make good decisions. You're a strong young man, I'm so proud of you." His voice breaks, and his next words come out sounding strangled. "Just remember how much I love you, and make sure you tell your Momma how much I love her too, okay? Things... things were never supposed to be like this." Josh stares at the ground for a minute, shaking his head, then he grips Trevor's face and kisses his forehead hard, while Trevor's hands clench tight around his father's wrists, reluctant to let him go.

I have to bite my fist and turn away, before I break down in tears of empathy. My gaze meets Connor's and his eyes are wet too, dark with pain and anger at the situation we're all in because of David.

Connor tells Terrence to get Trevor and David and the others off the boat. Terrence gives instructions to the Devout restraining David, and then he gently takes ahold of Trevor and begins to guide him away from his dad, toward the bow of the ship and the docks. Trevor is sobbing, still limping from his injuries, and follows Terrence's lead without protest. He knows there's no talking his dad out of his decision, so it's just a matter of acceptance at this point.

After a few moments, it's just the three of us, Josh, me, and Connor. We stand for a few seconds, staring at each other, our expressions bleak, yet colored with a newfound respect for each other.

Josh's plan is to drive the boat out into the water on the other side of the island, where the cross wind will force the fall out to blow across the water rather than fan out over the island itself. Of course he won't survive, but at least he will ensure his family's safety, as well as the safety of everyone else on the island.

Connor holds out a hand to Josh. Josh hesitates a fraction of a second, then grips it and shakes, giving him a nod. Josh turns to me, and I shake his hand as well.
