“This whole thing is an epic failure,” I slump into the chair in Kenz’s room wearing my Montgomery jersey, while she puts on her Prescott one and puts the finishing touches to her makeup. Today was a huge game for the team. One of two must-wins if they were going to get a bowl game and make it to the finals. And theoretically the last night for our agreement unless Liam decides he has room in his schedule for an extension.

“How do you figure?” Kenz looks up at me for a second before she leans into the mirror to put her eyeliner on.

“It’s not helping me get him out of my system. I signed up for that dating app Ben suggested, and I just flick through profiles and none of them appeal to me.”

“Yeah dearest, you can’t be comparing guys on dating apps to your sexy as sin quarterback who spends half his time on the field and in the gym and the other half trying to please you. It’s not exactly fair.”

“He does not spend half his time trying to please me.”

“Oh, is it more like 40 percent with all the extra practice time lately?” she asks sarcastically.

I make a face at her.

“I think this was a bad idea. Because now I know a whole lot more about him I didn’t know before.”

“And you like it?” Kenz grins and raises a brow at me.

“Like what?” Wren pops into the room and settles on Kenz’s bed. She’s already dressed for work, and I wish just once we could get her to go to a game with us. But alas, being the manager at a sports bar near campus means you work game days.

“Newly discovered aspects of Liam’s… Personality? Anatomy?” Kenz smirks at me.

I shoot her a look but turn to Wren, “I’m just saying that I think this whole plan might have been a mistake. I think it might have made things worse and not better.”

“Operation fuck-him-out-of-your-system not going so well, huh?” Wren gives me a pitiful look.

“I don’t know. I’m more confused than ever and time is basically up. And I have no idea what’s going on in his head. I don’t want to ask either, he has enough on his plate with everything football-wise and school-wise. The last thing he needs is me asking him to break down his feelings for me. Can you imagine how grumpy that would make him?”

“I mean, whatever his feelings might be, or however complicated given your past, it’s obvious that there’s more than friendship going on,” Kenz tries to comfort me.

“Did you have an agreed end date to this whole thing?”

“Yep. That’s the thing, it’s tonight.”

“Tonight?” Kenz looks at me wide-eyed.

“Yes, when we discussed it… that was part of our agreement. Not letting it stretch out too long and then him needing to focus if they got this far in the season.”

“Have you… gone to the end zone yet?” Wren raises a brow, a little smirk threatening to form on her lips.

“No.”

“Are you going to?” Kenz points her makeup brush at me.
