Chapter Eleven

Chloe was nervous, but she did her best to keep that fact from Ro. She didn’t think she’d fooled him that morning, but he was being nice and not mentioning it.

She was nervous, but not scared.

And the difference was huge. For the last few years, she’d been angry, but frequently scared. Scared to be around Leon and Abbie. Scared when he left one of his bodyguards to watch over her. Scared her brother would find out she was siphoning funds. Scared he’d find out she was plotting to disappear. Scared the Mafia would show up one day and drag her off to torture her. Scared when she was working at the club.

But Ro didn’t scare her. He merely made her nervous. Probably because she felt something for him . . . in a way she hadn’t felt in a very long time. Last night had been eye-opening for her. Seeing his gaze on her and the desire in his eyes had made her feel pretty and feminine. Not like an object to be had or controlled, which was how she’d felt around the men Leon had set her up with.

And that kiss.

Chloe wanted to fan herself just remembering it.

The hand at her nape had felt like a brand, but instead of causing panic, it had made her want to lean in closer. He’d kissed her like she’d never been kissed before. He was in control, which wasn’t surprising, but he was gentle about it. One of the last men she’d gone out with at Leon’s insistence had kissed her at the end of the night, but his kiss had been way different. His had been about control and force.

Chloe knew if she’d protested, tried to pull back, or otherwise given him the smallest sense that she didn’t want him to kiss her, Ro would have let go.

But she hadn’t wanted him to let her go. The way he’d dominated her had been hot. Because he’d been concentrating on her pleasure, not his own. How she knew that, Chloe had no idea, but she did. Ever since, all she could think about was how it would feel for him to kiss her all over. To touch her with his hands as he took her mouth.

They’d played the stupid card game well into the night. Around twelve thirty, he’d finally called it quits. She’d been winning, and he said he’d put their cards aside so they could take it up again at a later time.

He’d told her to go on upstairs and get to sleep, as they would most likely be headed out early the next morning. She hadn’t thought about the fact she was sleeping in his room until she was snuggled under the covers in the new pajama set Allye had bought her.

His earthy, masculine scent permeated everything. The pillow smelled like him. The sheets smelled like him. Chloe had clutched a pillow to her chest and turned on her side, inhaling his comforting scent.

Then she’d sat up. She couldn’t take his bed.
