When birdcalls outside her window woke Bree, she shut her eyes again, willing the dream back. It had been surreal—Yaslin playing with her hair, running sensual fingers up the back of her neck until Bree was squirming with arousal. She stretched, reveling in the feel of satin sheets against her over-stimulated body.

She shot up straight. Satin sheets?

Everything came flooding back: she was in the guest room of the royal suite, and she was engaged to Yaslin. Oh, dear Goddess! It hadn't been a dream.

Still in a state of semi-arousal, she looked out the window. She punched the pillow and groaned. By the position of the moons, she should have prepared the royal bath half an hour ago. Hastily, she pulled on a morning dress and, after brushing her hair, knocked on the Queen's inner bedroom door.

When Yaslin called, “Come in,” she tentatively entered, uncertain what reception she would receive.

Yaslin was writing a letter at her desk in the corner. Bree's pulse gave a flip. She looked incredibly alluring in a robe with a hint of thigh, with her hair disheveled and feet bare. She put down the quill and turned to look at Bree. “Good morning. Did you sleep well?”

Bree felt she should say something meaningful, but words escaped her. “Yes, Ma—um—Yaslin. Shall I prepare your bath?”

Yaslin smiled at her, looking amused. “Just today. Tomorrow, another maid will do it and draw yours as well.” She paused and added, “Sophie. “

Bree felt the blush rise in her cheeks. “It’s like a dream. I’ve never been in such a wonderful bed. Or had a dress like this.”

Yaslin swept her eyes over her. “I was right. The color suits you. When the kitchen maid comes with my breakfast in an hour, I'll ask her to take it into the sitting room and bring another tray. After she sees you there, the whole Palace will know I have a strange woman in my chambers. Having been forewarned, they'll be dying to meet you. In the meantime, we'll work out where you came from and what your family does for a living.”

“I’ll prepare your bath,” said Bree, her heart squeezing in her chest. There was no going back now. Their lives would be forever entwined, and when she had to go away to help Savannah, she would return.

As she watched the soft contours of Yaslin’s lovely face, the prospect of marrying her no longer felt frightening, just a little daunting. She would have to learn to behave in polite society and not make too many blunders.

Once she filled the royal bath, she returned to her room to bathe. Her bathroom was smaller than Yaslin’s but huge compared to the one at Longberry. Her mind drifted back to the farm, and she wondered how her mother was faring. For months Bree had cried herself to sleep, praying someone from home would come to rescue her from the nightmare. But as the years passed, thoughts of the life she'd left behind faded like her hope. She
