Chapter Six
Sage opened her eyes and started to jerk upright but a heavy arm draped across her waist. For a moment, she almost panicked when she realized she was naked but the night before came rushing back with a vengeance. The vandalism, the phone call, and then her sobbing all over Trent.
She cringed when she remembered the way she’d lost it. She didn’t understand why he even wanted her here with him anymore. She was such a mess. Moving slowly, she tried to slide off the bed when his hand clamped across her abdomen.
“Going somewhere?” Trent murmured. His low, seductive voice sent shivers throughout her entire body.
She tried to roll over but he kept her immobile. His erection pressed into her back, firm and insistent, but he seemed content to simply hold her. Despite the circumstances, she still felt secure with Trent, safe in his arms. She linked her fingers through his so that both their hands lay against her stomach.
“I’ve thought about you a lot the past couple years,” she murmured into the quietness. She hoped she wasn’t making a mistake by admitting it. She couldn’t not tell him though.
It was still dark out but enough moonlight streamed in through the blinds. He had a masculine, wood sleigh bed, king-size of course. The dark blue comforter with pinched pleats was thick and warm, though not as warm as him. The man was a furnace, something she loved.
He was silent for a long moment and she wondered if he’d even respond. Her heart rate increased when he did. “I’ve thought about you too, probably too much… Is everything you told me about yourself true?”
Meaning back when they spent that intense week together. The hesitation in his voice clawed at her. She hated that he had to question her, even if she didn’t blame him. She’d run like a coward because she’d been a complete wreck back then. He’d been the only bright spot in her life and she’d been too afraid to lean on him. She hadn’t known him well enough and leaving had been easier. At least that was what she’d told herself.
“Yes. What I didn’t tell you was that the night we met…” God, she still didn’t know how to say the words. She wasn’t ready to tell him what had happened to Marie; that she’d just come from her sister’s murder trial the day they’d met. But Sage wanted to be more open with him. “It had just been a rough couple months,” she finished lamely. “You and I met as I was leaving the city. I’d deleted all my social media accounts and was basically leaving everything behind. Or trying to.”
“Did your leaving have to do with your sister?”
“Yeah,” she rasped out.
His grip tightened around her. “I’m sorry.” Even if he didn’t know all of the truth, his words were sincere.
“I basically drove until I didn’t trust myself to be on the road. I’d already sold almost everything I owned so it was easy to pick up and go.
