CHAPTER 11

SANDO

Sando was as close to panicking as he had ever been as he leant over Jordan. Jordan lay unmoving on the road. Sando touched his shoulder gently and he groaned and opened his eyes. Sando knelt down beside him.

“You OK?” he signed.

Jordan looked around.

“Where girls?” he signed back.

“Dad’s going to check on them. You scared me! I thought you were dead.”

Jordan grimaced.

“Not dead yet. Sore.”

Max crossed to where Keri was standing with Mereana.

“What happened?” he asked.

Keri was hysterical.

“The van came back! He tried to run us over! Jordan’s been hit and he’s hurt.”

Mereana was sobbing.

“Okay,” Max said, “It’s okay now. We’re here to help. Are you two okay?”

The girls nodded. “Just some grazes and bruises I think,” Mereana said.

“Keri? How about you?”

“The same. I’m okay. Just make sure Jordan’s going to be alright.”

He gave both the girls a quick hug and then went to Jordan. As he got down beside him, Jordan struggled to sit up.

“I okay. Look at house,” Jordan said.

“Are you sure, old man?” Max asked.

Jordan nodded.

The two policemen who had been calling for an ambulance and for back-up, came over to the group.

“Oh, it’s you kids. What have you been up to?” Constable Jones crouched down beside them.

Max quickly relayed what he knew, and Keri took the two police officers to the house.

“What’s the matter, old man?” Max said to Jordan. “Where hurt?” he signed.

“Leg,” said Jordan, and in the light of the moon they could see his jeans were ripped open on his right thigh.

“What else?” signed Max.

“Nothing,” said Jordan. “Only leg.”

“Okay, don’t move, the ambulance will be here soon. Here, let me put this under your head.”

Max folded up his jacket and slipped it under Jordan’s head.

“Here Dad, put this over him,” Sando said, taking off his own jacket.

Sando turned to Mereana.

“Are you okay?” he asked her.

“Yeah, I guess so. Just shaking. I was so scared when the car came back.”

“I saw it go past. They must have seen something and come back to frighten you off.”

“It worked,” Mereana hugged herself to stop the shaking. “Should we go and talk to the police?”

“Yeah. Can’t do much else until the ambulance gets here. Dad, we’re going to see what’s happening.”

“Okay, but don’t get in their way. They’ll be busy in there.”

Sando sighed in frustration. “I know Dad!”

The police were inside the house and had turned on the lights. They were finishing off fingerprinting the door handle.

“Nothing here,” Constable Jones said. “They were wearing gloves, woollen ones by the looks.”

“All electrical appliances appear to have gone from inside,” reported the other. “I’m guessing TV, fridge, stereo, and washing machine. The owners live in Hamilton. We’ll have to contact them tonight.”

“Any chance you kids got the number plate?”

“Yes,” said Mereana. “LAT613. Jordan got it. They came back and tried to run us down. I guess they must have seen us as they drove away.”

“What kind of vehicle?” asked Constable Jones.

“A van of some kind,” replied Sando. “But we’d be better asking Jordan. He knows cars.”

Jordan was lying back in the road with his eyes closed.
