“Here’s your drink.” Ylena handed Rev a glass of beer. “What did I miss?”

“Quinn is winning a lot of money. No sign of whoever wrote the note.” Rev was close to Quinn’s side, cheering him on.

“How long should we wait?” asked Ylena.

Rev shrugged. “Don’t know. Now that I’ve got a beer, I don’t mind staying longer.” She smiled and yelped as Quinn won his current hand.

Ylena walked the few steps to where Tayeh and Wilder lingered. “Any sign of our contact?”

“Since we don’t know who it is, it’s hard to say,” said Tayeh with a frown.

“At least I found a few people I know to be part of the Spectacle,” said Wilder.

Ylena looked around the open room and realized they might wait for a long time and for nothing. The flashing lights felt too bright, and there were so many people and so many sounds that she felt suffocated.

“I think I’m going to wait outside for a while.” At Wilder and Tayeh’s expressions, she added, “I won’t go far. I’ll be right outside.”

She walked out the door and sat on the large stone steps in the purple glow of the crystal. She leaned back against a giant statue of an animal she couldn’t identify and closed her eyes. Sharing that memory of Pim had drained her more than any other Gift had. Her emotions were raw, and her thoughts were fuzzy.

A baby was crying. She didn’t know who would have a baby in a casino, but she could hear the baby’s hiccupping sobs just a few steps away. She looked around corners and down alleys and along roofs, but she didn’t see the child anywhere. The cries reminded her of the sound of the little children from the nursery she visited with Caed. Those babies had powerful Gifts, but they were still so small. Caed was so good at comforting them …

If only she could find this child, she might help. Why was the baby so sad? Tears were dangerous for children that young because they didn’t know how to control their Gift. He must be so lonely and confused. She’d felt like that when she first discovered her Gifts. She climbed the wall to get a better view of the cave so she could see where the baby was hiding …

“Ylena.” Wilder’s hand was on her arm.

She lifted her head from the statue and blinked in the bright glow. “There was a baby crying. Did you hear it?”

Wilder shook his head. “I think you were dreaming.” His smile was kind as he offered her a hand to stand.

“A dream?” She couldn’t shake the sound of the child’s cries.

“I don’t blame you. It’s been a long day. We didn’t have any luck finding the contact, and I thought I’d come find you so we could all leave together.”

“It felt so real … I guess I’m more tired than I thought …” She still felt unsettled, but she ran her hand through her black hair and straightened her clothes to feel more put together.
