CHAPTER TEN
DANAâS THOUGHTS raced as fast as the car on their way home. How could two people have such opposing views on the same event? She shifted around to see if Hal was asleep yet. In the process, and still sitting sideways, Dana found herself watching Logan in profile.
If ever there was a man with more exquisite features, she didnât know who. It wasnât even that he was so good-looking; it was the way looking at him affected her.
Sometimes he literally took her breath away. Sheâd never experienced that kind of rush with anyone else. Not before sheâd met Logan or since.
From the moment theyâd met, she was in lust with him. Love had come a little later, but not much.
âI told Jilly Iâd go over for a visit once Hal is in bed. Dâyou mind?â
Logan glanced over, frowned and then brought his gaze back to the road. âMind? Why would I mind?â
âWell, I donât want you to thinkââ She cut herself off, realizing she shouldnât say some things in front of Hal on the off chance she wasnât sleeping soundly. âOh, never mind.â She shook her head, gesturing that theyâd talk later.
Later came faster than sheâd wanted. Hal had gone to bed immediately, so Dana grabbed the wine sheâd purchased after work and was at the door when Logan stopped her.
âSo, what was it you were going to say in the car? You didnât want me think what?â
Dana tucked the bottle under her arm and expelled a breath. âIt was nothing. Really.â
His expression said, Yeah right.
âOkay. I didnât want you to think I was taking advantage of the fact that you were here. You knowâ¦using you for a baby-sitter while I went out.â
âI thought you were only going next door?â
âI am, but stillâ¦â
âSo how does that translate to your taking advantage? Iâm Halâs father. Iâm as responsible for taking care of her as you are.â
He was right. And it felt good to hear him say it. So why did she feel as if she was imposing on him? It didnât make sense. âOkay, then. Iâll be back in an hour or so.â
âEnjoy yourself.â
He winked and her stomach fluttered, just as it had the first time theyâd met. If sheâd thought her spirits were uplifted this morning, it was nothing compared to the way sheâd felt after hearing Logan describe their wedding. She walked across the front yard to Jillianâs feeling a little floaty, as if sheâd already guzzled the bottle of wine.
It didnât take long for that feeling to be a fact. After most of the second bottle of wine was gone, Jilly hoisted her glass in the air and said, âAnother toast!â
Jillian had also bought a bottle of wine for the evening, and after polishing off the first, both had agreed it would be a shame not to at least sample the other one.
âA toast to what?â Dana asked. Theyâd already sung the praises of little girls full of sweetness and spice, scorned meddling mothers-in-law, thanked their lucky stars for fulfilling jobs, and lamented the woes of same.
