“You know I can’t do that, Eliza. What if Paul finds out?”
I slid around my chair in front of him, giving him what I hoped was an innocent smile.
“Come on, Greg. Help me out here. Just one search and I will back off. I know you want in on this.”
I was at the paper, hiding from Paul, but needing the services of the intern that was technically my rival. All I needed to know was if Leonard was on all of the accounts for the Fiori fortune and since Greg’s girlfriend, Stacy, worked at the bank in which the check was from, all I needed him to do was call her and ask to do a little snooping.
He had given me the ‘I can’t get her fired’ speech at least three times in the last thirty minutes, but I could see curiosity start to get the better of him every time I argued my case. He wanted to know what it was for, and knew what with my insistence meant that it was something juicy.
“It’s for a big story,” I finally said, lowering my voice to a whisper. “And I might be inclined to let you contribute to it. We’ll be on the front page buddy, famous, but I need my question answered first.”
Greg sighed and looked at the check, his eyes poring over the information. “All you need to know is if this dude is on all the accounts? That’s it?”
“Yes, that’s all, there’s no harm in knowing that,” I said, crossing my heart with my fingers. I had a hunch, but before I took it to the man who was at the center of it all, I wanted to make sure I was right.
He picked up the phone, pausing as he went to dial the number. “I need for you to go somewhere. I won’t have you hovering over my shoulder while I do this.”
I held up my hands and stood. “Sure, I’ll go to the café downstairs and grab some coffee. Call me when you’re done.”
He nodded and I walked downstairs and handed over far too much for a tiny cup of coffee. It wasn’t ten minutes later that Greg joined me, a piece of paper in his hand.
“I thought you were going to call?”
He shrugged. “Here,” he said thrusting it at me. “The Fiori’s have countless accounts with the bank—a little too many. She said it was odd but not that unusual. But you know what they all have in common?”
On the edge of my seat I asked the question, “What?”
“All of them are set up the same and all of them have this Leonard fellow as the one with full control.”
“Thanks, Greg,” I said breathlessly.
“Wait, I’m not done yet.”
I nodded for him to continue. What else could there be?
“You got me thinking… and well, she also looked up the names individually,” he said as he pointed to a few lines on the document he’d given me. The notes were made up of mostly numbers, two long strings.
