The gates to the house are already opened to accommodate the cars that park along the drive. My stomach tightens. I know she’s mad, but now as I see the house lit up, I wonder how mad she really is—and what exactly I am stepping into. I pull up at the steps; it seems to be the only available space. Knocking off the car, I take a final look at my phone before getting out. The music is loud and the voices crawl over the beats as I enter the hall. I’m met by nods and smiles. I don’t know these people. The main living space has been emptied and the room is full. In the middle of them all, is Maria, laughing and smiling while holding a flute of champagne. She looks stunning in a red, over the top, full-length dress that touches the floor. Her hair is slicked back and when her eyes meet mine, her red lips stretch across her white teeth.

Alcohol clouds her stunning brown eyes. The V at the front of her dress stops at her belly button, showing off her tanned, toned stomach. She walks towards me with all she’s worth. If I was any other man, I would see how fucking dangerous Maria is right now.

She takes a glass of champagne off the bar without taking her eyes off me. It’s hard not to look away from her, she’s stunning.

“What’s this for?” I ask as I take the champagne from her.

“To my husband.” She clinks her glass with mine and takes a sip.

I’m not amused by her at all. “You’re pissed at me?”

She throws her head back and laughs, drawing the attention of everyone in the room.

I smile at them all before I stare at Maria. “You have my attention.” I tell her through gritted teeth. That’s obviously what she wants.

She stops. “I don’t get mad. I get even.” She leans in and places a kiss on my cheek before walking away.

Gripping her arm, I smile at her and drag her back to me. “Whatever you’re planning, call it off now.”

Her smile leaves her face. “Or what?”

I flash her a warning look that I know she won’t listen to. A couple passes us.

“He can’t keep his hands off me.” She tells them while laughing.

I’m not laughing. This isn’t fucking funny.

She pulls her arm from me. “Enjoy your party.” She’s already had too much to drink; I can see it in the sway of her hips. The dress leaves nothing to the imagination.

When I look up, I find King looking at me. He doesn’t give me his signature grin. He takes a gulp from his brandy glass before turning away.

I seek out Charlie. He’s in the kitchen.

“I have no idea,” he says before I even ask him what the hell is going on. “She was asking questions about Andrew.” Charlie moves in close to me so only I can hear.

“You told her nothing?” I question him. He better not have. I trust Charlie, but the look he’s wearing on his face has me questioning him.
