The gates to the house are already opened to accommodate the cars that park along the drive. My stomach tightens. I know sheâs mad, but now as I see the house lit up, I wonder how mad she really isâand what exactly I am stepping into. I pull up at the steps; it seems to be the only available space. Knocking off the car, I take a final look at my phone before getting out. The music is loud and the voices crawl over the beats as I enter the hall. Iâm met by nods and smiles. I donât know these people. The main living space has been emptied and the room is full. In the middle of them all, is Maria, laughing and smiling while holding a flute of champagne. She looks stunning in a red, over the top, full-length dress that touches the floor. Her hair is slicked back and when her eyes meet mine, her red lips stretch across her white teeth.
Alcohol clouds her stunning brown eyes. The V at the front of her dress stops at her belly button, showing off her tanned, toned stomach. She walks towards me with all sheâs worth. If I was any other man, I would see how fucking dangerous Maria is right now.
She takes a glass of champagne off the bar without taking her eyes off me. Itâs hard not to look away from her, sheâs stunning.
âWhatâs this for?â I ask as I take the champagne from her.
âTo my husband.â She clinks her glass with mine and takes a sip.
Iâm not amused by her at all. âYouâre pissed at me?â
She throws her head back and laughs, drawing the attention of everyone in the room.
I smile at them all before I stare at Maria. âYou have my attention.â I tell her through gritted teeth. Thatâs obviously what she wants.
She stops. âI donât get mad. I get even.â She leans in and places a kiss on my cheek before walking away.
Gripping her arm, I smile at her and drag her back to me. âWhatever youâre planning, call it off now.â
Her smile leaves her face. âOr what?â
I flash her a warning look that I know she wonât listen to. A couple passes us.
âHe canât keep his hands off me.â She tells them while laughing.
Iâm not laughing. This isnât fucking funny.
She pulls her arm from me. âEnjoy your party.â Sheâs already had too much to drink; I can see it in the sway of her hips. The dress leaves nothing to the imagination.
When I look up, I find King looking at me. He doesnât give me his signature grin. He takes a gulp from his brandy glass before turning away.
I seek out Charlie. Heâs in the kitchen.
âI have no idea,â he says before I even ask him what the hell is going on. âShe was asking questions about Andrew.â Charlie moves in close to me so only I can hear.
âYou told her nothing?â I question him. He better not have. I trust Charlie, but the look heâs wearing on his face has me questioning him.
