A part of me wants to throw my inhibitions to the wind and jump into the well, even if it’s cold. I want to feel that freedom and recklessness. Maybe it will take all the pain and frustration away, and cleanse my soul.

I don’t realize just how close I’ve stepped toward the cliff’s edge until I hear Travis call my name. He’s looking at the sky, brows wrinkled. I lean my head back and scan the clouds. It looks darker than it was just a moment ago. As if the skies are about to open up and ruin our perfect moment.

Travis turns toward me, with his hand outstretched. “You ready to get out of here?”

I grab his hand and nod. When we’re walking through the tiny path to the stairs, something on the rock wall catches my attention. I pull up short to get a better look. There are messages carved into the rock, everywhere. Some are only initials and dates, while others are declarations of love. I feel like I’m getting small glimpses into the lives of these strangers.

“Hey, Travis,” I question. “Any chance you have a knife, or something sharp?”

He lets go of my hand and starts patting his pockets. Seconds later he retrieves a pocket knife and places it in my hand. “Try to hurry. I have one more place I want to take you.”

“Okay,” I reply, and get to work.

I don’t want to take too much time. Travis keeps nervously looking toward the horizon. No doubt hoping any bad weather holds off until he can show me the next part of our date.

Finally, minutes later, I’m done. I step to the side, admiring my quick masterpiece. Well, it’s not a work of art, just a small reminder that I was here. That this place spoke to me.

Travis looks at the letters I’ve added to the wall. A small “C & T, 2017” is scratched into the surface. It’s not very deep, so I’m not sure how long it will actually be visible. I grab my phone, run back to the cliff edge to snap a shot of the well, and back to the wall taking a picture of my handiwork.

The grin that takes over Travis’s face gives me butterflies. Maybe Darcy was right. What would it hurt to see where things go with him? I’m obviously attracted to him. He also hasn’t run off screaming, even though I haven’t been all that great to him.

“Are you ready now?” he asks, grabbing my hand once more. It feels comfortable, like my hand was meant for his.

“Absolutely,” I say. “Let’s go to this other mysterious location you have lined up.”

The trek down to Jacob’s Well was nothing compared to the inclines we face going back to the car. Good gravy, I did not think I was quite this out of shape. But it was worth it, to see this natural well, to feel the overwhelming peace.

We’ve just come up the last hill, and I can see the car in the distance.
