Chapter 17

Alina

It feels good to drive my jeep. I can’t remember the last time I was even in it let alone driving it. When Lincoln kidnapped me from my home after marking me, we left my jeep behind.

Driving, along with running and walking on the beach, is another thing that makes me feel free. I love having the top down with the wind blowing in my face and my arm slung out the window.

It’s interesting that driving, running and walking are the things that make me feel so free. I would imagine a lot of people feel the same. It’s the feeling of being liberated from the constraints of everyday life that I find being on the move so addictive. Or is it the feeling of just running away that I love?

I don’t know the answer to that question. But right now, I’m not running away at all. I’m definitely running towards something, or someone to be exact. I need answers, and there’s only one person that can give them to me.

I walk into a quiet Howler’s tonight. It’s a weeknight, so the small crowd gathered at a few tables throughout the bar are tame. Max isn’t at the bar tonight. I know he gives himself at least one night off a week. So his assistant manager is there. She’s a petite blonde with a pack tattoo on her left shoulder. I’m not sure if she’s a full-blooded shifter or a hybrid. But she’s always been kind enough the few times I’ve seen her. She gives me a courteous nod as I walk into the bar.

I see Tayla sitting at our usual table. She’s early, and Tayla is never early. When she sees me across the bar, she offers me a small smile and a half-hearted wave. Then she begins tapping her fingers on the wood tabletop incessantly.

“Hey, it’s good to see you. How are you feeling? You look good,” I start off the conversation as I throw my bag on the empty chair next to me and take a seat across from Tayla.

“It’s good to see you too. I’m good. You know, it’s been weird since the attack, but I’m okay. My parents have been great.”

“And your pack? How have they been towards you?”

She seems to get annoyed with that question, and it throws me. “My pack is my pack, Alina.” Her blue eyes are dull, and its easy to see she doesn’t really want to be here. But then she dials it back a bit.

“I’m sorry my parents wouldn’t let you come to our pack lands. They’re just worried.”

“About me? Do they think I’m going to hurt you, Tayla? Because you know that’s ridiculous.”

“I know, I know. It’s not that at all. It’s just because, well you know, I was attacked on Midnight Shadow pack lands.”

“No, you were found on Midnight Shadow pack lands. It doesn’t sound like you were attacked there.”

“Okay. Then I was attacked outside of Silver Moon pack lands. Both packs are linked to you.”

I can hardly believe what I’m hearing.
