Chapter E ight

“So, this your boyfriend, then?” Sami asked Amee and slid Colton a plate of onion rings.

“Not yet, but I’d like to be,” Colton smiled at Amee.

“Watch out for him, girlie. He’s a charmer,” Sami winked.

Amee looked down at her food. Great, Sami was now another person who expected her to fight to live now. How did the list keep growing? Loki. Of course, the answer was Loki. He had shown up shortly before they decided to visit the restaurant. He had known Dr. Mendez’s parents would be here.

“So,” Louis said once the waitress was gone. “Your boyfriend….”

“He’s not my boyfriend,” Amee sighed. “That word just feels..”

“Wrong,” Colton laughed.

“Yeah.. After..” Amee nodded.

“Not to interrupt your little discussion about labels,” Louis said, “but with the way you two were playing tongue hockey in the parking lot I’d say he’s your boyfriend.”

“Honey, don’t be like that,” Greg stole a fry from Louis’s plate. “If she wants to kiss him it doesn’t mean she has to date him.”

“I’m going to be sorely disappointed in this whole trip if you don’t. Do you know how numb my ass was? This prick,” he pointed to Colton, “wouldn’t even let me pull over so we could stretch our legs. Do me a favor and throw him a bone. I mean, seriously, woman, I had to drive that damn car. The whole time I was shitting bricks that a mosquito was going to fly into it and nick the paint. He would have had my head. He treats that car like he gave birth to it or fathered it, I should say. So, really, think about it. I mean, I assume you guys were driving down to see him. There has to be a connection then, right?”

“Shut up, Louis,” Greg and Colton said at the same time.

“Anyway, one day, Colton shows up at my house,” Louis said flowing with the subject change. “I think he’s stoned out of his gourd.”

“I don’t smoke weed,” Colton said.

“Well, that day, I thought you made an exception,” Louis laughed. “He shows up at my house talking about a god or spirit or I don’t even remember the other things he called him. He just kept talking about Loki showing up to him. He doesn’t believe he’s hallucinating or anything like that. Now, this was the same guy who didn’t believe me when I told him I saw bigfoot on the beach.”

“Did you?” Loki asked. “He’s usually more of a mountain man.”

“I did!” Louis slapped the table. “He was surfing!”

“He did not,” Colton laughed. “He was drunk off his ass that night.”

“Drinking?” Amee asked.

“Don’t worry,” Louis patted her elbow. “Your boyfriend refuses to drink anything after..” Colton kicked him under the table. “OUCH! This is how you treat your best friend who volunteered to take an ass numbing ride with you up the coast?”

“After what?” Amee asked.

“So, you didn’t see it then?” Colton sighed in relief. “I’ll explain later.”

“I guess we do get a bit of privacy even if he,” Amee jerked her head in Loki’s direction, “doesn’t think we deserve it.
