Chapter 16

Gia

The conversation between Giancarlo and Tor is not kept to a series of low exchanges like I’d thought. I don’t know why I thought it would be guarded from me, that they’d protect me from the fallout surrounding Tom’s attack.

I don’t feel disappointed when they have their conversation as if I weren’t there at all. Rather, I feel included in their privacy and with that inclusion comes a sense of belonging. Not just with Tor—but that too—but here in his life, in Las Vegas.

Giancarlo doesn’t speak of me as if I am temporary, rather, he speaks of me with a knowingness in his tone, familiarity for me, with me being rooted here visible on the horizon. They’re not including me because I have no additional information, the solution to the problem has nothing to do with me nor do I work at the hotel. But I’m included in the sense that they don’t shelter me from it. Though I know that Tor will treat me like glass and not let his eyes off me for a while.

Gian notified Tor that Bryan and Bart had been given a paid taxi back to their hotel—after they’d given statements to security as well as their contact information. I didn’t know if I’d hear from Bryan again but at this point, I really didn’t care. In addition, he told Tor that Tom had been picked up and “taken to a safe place for the night”, whatever the hell that meant. Jail? A makeshift casino jail? Is that a thing? I didn’t even care.

“Angelo had the footage pulled from next door.” He doesn’t say ‘it will corroborate everything I’m saying’, though it must be implied. Gian waves his hand in front of him as if to say the footage means very little to him, and I take note of the amount of gold rings on just one hand. Isn’t that uncomfortable? When I’d watched The Sopranos, I always wondered how these husky Italian men got those rings off their fingers when they didn’t drink anything that wasn’t amber-colored or couldn’t clean a wound. Did they ever drink water?

Gian puts the weight of himself into one finger when he punches the intercom button on his phone. In less than a minute a thin man in a business suit comes in, making eye contact only with Gian.

“Ready?” he asks. He has a laptop tucked under his arm and his suit—while not filled out in that same masculine way that Tor wears his—is expensive. The man sits in a leather tufted chair in front of Gian’s mahogany desk. Dark and cherry woods, rich velvets and gold accents comprise the boss’s office and I wonder if this ornate old-world style commands more respect than something more up-to-date. I suppose white woods and shiplap don’t really say “or else”, do they?

Gian looks to Tor, who nods to say yes and for the second time in the span of five minutes, he tells the man—who I know now to be a lawyer—exactly what happened.
