Notes

1. I draw from my work with human rights pedagogy at Makerere University and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, using codes of ethics in different disciplines to distill human rights principles. From 1992–98, I worked with colleagues to establish the Makerere University Human Rights and Peace Center (HURIPEC) in Uganda, a project that was integral to what I do as an anthropologist and historian.

2. See Robertshaw and Kamuhangire (1996) for parallel processes with a Cwezi shrine in Uganda, and Denbow et al. (2009) for parallel processes in Botswana. In the latter case, the re-interanimation occurs within a Christian faith.

3. Reports of people visiting Kaiija in the nights have been made for some years. Recently cowry shells were observed on the platform erected in the place where Kaiija was once located.
